B120 com port error 633

Question

The other day, for no apparent reason, my relatively new just out of warranty B120 suddenly started giving me the message 'Error 633 - The modem is already in use or is not configured for dialing out' when I try to sign on to my dialup internet connection. So I go to my 'Help and Support Center' to run a modem troubleshooter. It sends me to the Device Manager where I'm supposed to double-click 'Ports (COM & LPT)'. The trouble is that 'Ports (COM & LPT)' isn't listed in my Device Manager. So I go to Modems instead and run a diagnostic which tells me that 'The port the modem is attached to could not be opened. This may be the result of a hardware conflict. Check the divice manager to verify alll devices are functional.' But Ports is not listed in my device manager. Modem properties tells me that the modem is functioning properly. A local computer repair guy thinks I need a new modem. But it looks to me like the port is the problem. What should I do?

Go with the repair guy. Modems are easily replaced and the cheapest option. And they fail quite frequently.

PS Laptops don't have LPT and Com ports listed in device mgr.
