It may be related to the Smartcard on that platform.  Make sure that you install the TI7510 sw.

I also was missing the driver. It's: related to the TI card. Just do a search for drivers and it will find those. (I think)

i have those drivers installed, and the TI card shows up correctly in device manager. this appears to be something else. can anyone confirm what this device is, and/or what driver it needs?

-After installing the TI Cardbus drivers, Dell System Drivers, and Intel Chipset Drivers, go to Device Manager in WinXP.

-Right click on the Base System Device and select Update Drivers.

-Select the option which has WinXP search for the correct drivers (make sure you have the Dell Resource CD in the CD-ROM.) WinXP should find the drivers and install them automagically.

Just did this recently so it should work, post back if you have any more probs.

Did all this.

Drivers were found and loaded. Now in the device manager the Base System Device has gone away. Instead, I have a TI UltraMedia Firmware Loader Device under system devices (apparently working OK).

Unfortunately, I also have a TEXAS_Instruments UltraMedia Smart Card Adapter under Smart card readers which is reported as not having driver installed. These are not part of the TI PCI7510 cardbus drivers I downloaded and not on the Dell CD.

Where can I find this driver?

I followed the instructions here (used the Dell System Utilities CD), and now have all devices listed as working in the Device Manager.

I don't know about you guys, but I am using Windows XP on a domain at work.  When on a domain, you can't use the new WinXP logon screen, but instead must use the old WinNT4/Win2K logon screen that makes you press Cntl+alt+del.

What is interesting is that now that I fixed the base system device and installed the driver from the CD, now my logon screen says "Insert smart card or press cntrl+alt+del", where it used to say "Press cntrl+alt+del".  It even shows an icon of the TI UltraMedia smart card adapter next to the little keyboard icon on this logon notice.

Kind of cool...

[Note that I don't have any kind of smart card software, or even a smart card - this seems to be a function of the Dell-supplied drivers.]

I have win2003server not XP. And it seems that Dell Resource CD doesn't contain drivers for w2003server :( Does anyone have any ideas where to get these drivers?

thanks,

Hi All,

finally I got the solution for my problem with Base System Device for my D800 running Windows Server 2003. I've downloaded and installed the new driver (for TI smartcard) available from DELL Support under the Chipset section. After installing it system requested the install of other TI driver which is available on DELL CD. After completing this install everything is finally working fine - no message of "new hardware found" every time you restart or load. Hope it will have in case you have the same problem.

Regards,

Romans

P.S. It would be great if DELL would have some notification system to inform users each time new driver update is released.

I upgraded my D800 from Win2k to XP. Ever since, I was having the same problem discussed here with Base System Device not having the correct driver. I downloaded and installed all the latest drivers from Dell web site, but no help. I contacted Dell *GOLD* support, no help. The tech simply told me that, I have to format my hard driver, (I have more than 40 GB of data) and re-install the OS in this order.

Install the operating system (W2K, XP Home, or Pro).
Install the Service Pack.
Install the Dell Notebook System Software (NSS).
Install the chipset driver.
Install the cardbus controller driver.
Install Microsoft DirectX (W2K only).
Install the video drivers.
Install the audio drivers.
Install the communications drivers.
Install the network drivers as applicable (integrated network controller, wireless, Bluetooth).
Install the touchpad drivers.
Install the Intel Speedstep driver (W2K only).
Install the Microsoft SpeedStep Fix for WinXP.
Install the Dell QuickSet.
Install the SMC Fast IrDA driver (W2K only).

He said there's no other way. I was kind of disappointed that I have to format and re-install everything. Thank god I saw this post. I downloaded the latest TI driver (R62804), when the Found New hardware wizard came up after the reboot, I pointed it to this driver folder, it installed the driver and I don't see Found New Hardware wizard anymore, every time I reboot .

Now, I have to check if my USB 2.0 device work properly later today. But still, during reboot, I get stuck in the "Preparing network connection" screen for too long (almost 4 mins) before the actual login screen come-up. Anyone has any clue?

I betcha it's the IRDA port on the laptop.  It's funny how dell included drivers for windows 2000, but not XP.  I have XP as well and suspect the base device is the infrared port.  Really stinks too because I would like to use the IR port with my Nokia phone.  Oh well, there's the award winning customer service for you.

It's not the IRDA device (wich is disabled by default in the bios) ...

it's the smartcard/cardbus drivers see first page

My D800 was preloaded with xp Pro when I got it, and I've never seen that problem.  I wonder how common it is. . .

If you got your XP pre-loaded, I think you won't have any problem. Only when you upgrade it by yourself, all these driver issues come up, for which Dell Technical support has no clue on how to resolve it.

I'm still having problems with the USB ports after the upgrade. whenever I plug-in USB 2.0 device, a message is appearing on the system tray with a message 'Hi-Speed device is plugged into low speed port" or something like that. I tried updating all the drivers for d800 from Dell web site, no help. I guess I'll just have to live with this for now.

Customer technical support indicated to me that the problem gettin the "System Base Device" Hardware detection arises if the drivers are not installed in the correct order, and that a complete reinstall is required.

The correct driver installation order is:

(1) System Software

(2) Chipset

(3) Network Drivers

(4) Video

After each of these first 4 items a system reboot is required.

They advise that all remain drivers can be installed in any order.

The English portion of the SYstem Information Guide at page 13 tells you to use the Drivers and Utilities CD to perform these steps but does not mention the order.  I have not yet determined if this is mentioned in any documentation on the CD itself.

Since the above posts (quite helpful!) are from some time ago, I wonder if anyone else has any newer comments regarding this problem.
