Battery Error Message

When I boot up my Inspiron 700m, I get "Warning: The battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge batteries until this battery is removed."

Does anyone know what the problem is? Is it time for a new laptop? or just a new battery, if I can get one?

:^/ Dell batteries don't last forever.  It seems that yours has reached the end of its useful lifespan, and that you'll need to get another one.  If the laptop works without any battery, then you know it's not time to replace the laptop....

:^/ Without havinng it to hand to examine it, my only recommendation can be to try cleaning the contacts with a Q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol.  That should insure good enough contact to send a charge, though it remains to be seen whether your battery is new enough to respond well.

Thanks for the info. I think it is the battery. The laptop works with the power cord.
