Battery Error messages.
I have an Inspiron 1501. I noticed the last few months that when I restart my computer I get an error message that the battery is not recognizable because of not being a Dell battery (it is). Today I found my backup battery and put it in. I got another error message that states "The model number for the primary battery cannot be determined. This will prevent any battery present from charging. Please insert a Dell battery for best system operation." When I put the original battery back in I get the same message. Both batteries are Dell batteries: Dell Battery Module Rechargeable Li-ion Battery Type KD476. Like I said, this is a new problem with my computer, which I have had for about 3 years now. Is there anything I can do to the comp to fix this, or do I need to take the computer to a shop to get this looked at?

First of all laptop batteries have limited life - i burn 1 each year. Getting 3 years of it is a pretty good deal.
If the laptop battery is worn to the thread and unused a long time, inserting it will not provide enough power for the laptop battery gauge chip to run on.
Hence - it can't report it's identity - and the laptop sees an unknown battery.
I don't think there's anything wrong - to it looks like worn batteries
