What you want to do would be better done with a desktop, but if you must buy a portable, I would consider a mobile workstation essential - a lightweight portable like the 1405 is not designed for heavy duty computing.

Consider the Precision M65 or M90 depending on the screen size and physical bulk you are willing to buy - if you must economize, the Latitude D820 is similar to but not as powerful in options as the M65.

You will not be happy with a small lightweight for those jobs.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think Inspiron 9400 is a good option?

The T7200 is probably the best compromise between price/performance. The T7400 is almost twice as expensive for very little speed boost.

Thank you. Which Core 2 Duo processors would you consider fast enough for this type of application?

It's a step down from the Latitudes or Precisions in build quality, but properly configured with a fast CPU, 2G of RAM, a 7200 rpm hard drive and an nVidia 7900GS card, it might serve.

Configured as base with integrated video, 5400 rpm drive and a slower CPU, it won't.

When talking about Matlab, "fast enough" is a matter of personal preference.

Matlab/Octave (open-source Matlab clone) on an Inspiron 8200 (P4-M 1.7) served me well throughout my masters' degree. Any of the current Core 2 Duos would eat that machine for lunch. Matlab and VC++ aren't exactly graphics-intensive either, so in theory you could get away with integrated graphics, but I would go with the 7900GS just in case you might start doing something graphics-intensive in the future. (The Intel GMA950 cannot be upgraded to anything else.)

Hello Folks!
Just need toask you guys.
Recently  i have made a dell purchase which i think itself was  a defective laptop to me. I have been calling dell to solve my problem,. But they are not able to solve. The worst part is that they hang up in the end telling they will call u back or put a fake promise blah blah.

Since so many months they have not able to solve it. In the end they say they will provide me with a system replace and transfer me to another representative. To my astonishment, They again start the old stories and make me do all test once again.

to me it seems weird that dell has made me to do PC rReset 3 times and formatinf 2 times and everytime i call i have to go for diagonistec test.

I never had such worst issues with other dealers. I think Dell tries to just shrug the responsibility and transfer you to one to other! Six months is a big time to make  solution?

Advise wht steps should i take to solve it?

Two things: a) Thread hijacking is Bad. Don't be surprised if your post gets deleted. An issue like this should be started in a new thread, as it is irrelevant to the thread it was posted in. b) We can't help you with your problems if you don't give us any details. You haven't even given the specific model of your laptop, let alone a proper description of the problem. For other users to help you (remember, this is primarily a user-to-user community forum with very little official Dell presence), we need information. Laptop model, configuration of the laptop (such as which video chipset for video problems), and most importantly a detailed description of the problem. You have provided none of the above. I can only guess that you are complaining about a stability problem but I can't even tell if that is the case since you have given absolutely no relevant information whatsoever other than that you think you have some sort of problem.
