Bios update -- "driver fail while locating SMM service"

Hi, I'm trying to update the BIOS on my Inspiron 15 (Windows 7 home premium SP1). I downloaded the file N4110A12.exe, and when I run it I get the error "Driver fail while locating SMM service." I have searched that phrase online and found nothing useful. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Thanks!

The BIOS you mention is for an N4110 system - a 14" model, or one of the 14R systems.  Carefully verify which model system you have -- there are many 15R systems -- the N5110 is one possibility, for which the BIOS is here:

< >

The exact model number (N5110, 5521, 5520, etc.) will appear on the setup screen (F2 at powerup).

If you try to flash the incorrect BIOS, you will see an error - this one, among others.  This is to protect you from winding up with a dead system.

Thanks, I'm not sure how I got that file. In fact the proper file, according to dell.com and my service tag, is <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>.exe. Here's what I get when I try to run that:

IHISI: Get support mode error in SMI!

SMI return code 0xEF

In other words, the proper one (AFAICT) doesn't work either.Suggestions?

Thanks!

That BIOS is for an XPS L521x -- not an Inspiron 15.

What is your EXACT system model (look it up from the setup screen - F2 at powerup).

If it's an Inspiron 15/15R, it'll be something like N5110, 5520, 5521, etc.

If it's an XPS, which exact one - XPS L501, L521x, etc.
