Blank Screen I7K - Windows 2000 Installation Problem -

I have an Inspiron 7000 that I am attempting to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. I checked with Dell and they said that my system can support this upgrade. So after researching the best way to do this, and following a list of instructions, I inserted the Windows 2000 upgrade disk.

I let the upgrade work overnight, and this morning when I checked the system, the screen was blank. I rebooted the system, and the Windows 2000 screen pops up, but then the blank screen is the final result.

Before I began the installation, I checked the Dell site to see if I needed an updated BIOS. But it did not indicate one for the Inspiron 7000. Can anyone give me an idea of what may be the issue, and what the solution might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brad

Do you think that since I am in the process of installing that I am out of luck? Or can a BIOS be installed at this point?

iirc you have to set something in bios to lcd before installing win2k on that model.
do a search of the forums as I've read the bios solution in here somewhere a while back.

Quick question. How do you install a BIOS? I checked throughout the forum, lots of topics about BIOS, but none that actually say how to do it. I have the BIOS downloaded onto a floppy.

Thanks for the any advice that you can give!

if I where you, I would make the necessary change in bios then do a clean install of win2k instead of an upgrade. unfortunately you'll have to reinstall all your programs using this avenue.

Boot to the floppy and follow the on screen instructions.  You need AC and a fully charged battery to run this.

I began the install of Win2k on my inspiron 7000 laptop.  Once it got to where it checks for keyboard, mouse etc. It blinks off and won't respond unless I turn it off. Then it just goes back through the set up and blinks out again.  I read this thread and flashed my bios with the newest one and am still getting the problem, even after redoing the whole install with a fresh format.  Any other options?

Don't forget that you also need to change your BOIS screen setting from  TV/Laptop to laptop screen only.

Good luck!
