Not seen that before but I suggest you enter BIOS and try resetting it to its default values.

That msg is generated by the Dell MBR.  What you should see during booting is:  Dell logo during POST (Power-On Self Test);  then blue line at top of screen with www.dell.com letters;  then "loading PBR 2...";  then the XP splash graphic with the animated bar;  and XP continues loading.  Those two small steps right after POST go by fast enough that many people don't notice them.

In your case, the system is hanging just as it's trying to read the second partition boot record (the XP partition).  There's a chance it could be a corrupted boot sector, but I think the most likely cause would be a failed hard disk.  To further diagnose this, visit the website of the hard disk manufacturer.  They probably have a free disk test utility you can download.

dg1261 had the right answer.  Thanks.  It was a problem with the MBR, but had to load a 2000 MBR to make it work, wouldn't accept xp.

ok..the answers to your questions

1. Could be a HDD problem (run F12 at dell logo ---> diagnostics and then Custom Test ---> Hard Drive ---> Confidence, Smart, Device sel Test and Read Test). If all passes then

2. Could be a factory image problem. Try loading the image with PC Restore again (CTRL + F11 at dell logo) If doesnt work then you will have to reinstall windows by CD.

Regards.
