Hi,

I don't think this is a hardware issue.  Try going into the System Setup on that motherboard and resetting it to factory defaults.   Maybe that will force it to recognize the OS drive (since it sees it installed).

Since the 0x00000040 error you're referencing normally refers to a driver issue I wouldn't think that the hard drive would have gone bad.   Now, whether the OS has become unrecoverable, I don't know at this point.

Try the BIOS reset and see if that helps.  Let me know and I'll see what else I can think of to try helping you.

Okay, so I followed the link and followed the instructions, tried it three times and didn't seem to get any results. No beep when I pressed Alt & F-key, no response to pressing Alt & B-key.

I tried holding down Alt/F and waiting for a beep (nothing after a minute of doing this), then just pressing the two keys and just sitting back and waiting for a beep. After about ten minutes I gave up on that too.

And the computer never once restarted when I pressed Alt/B.

When you were in the System Setup there should have been a section on the hard drives in the system.  What did it say for hard drive 1 (or SATA 1)?   Did it list the manufacturer and/or model numbers or just listed generic name?

I'm assuming since you didn't hear a beep that the BIOS was already at default settings.

Is that info supposed to appear in the initial window that pops up when you hit F2?

Or is under one of the options (Boot Device Configuration)?

Try you dell recovery to reload computer back to factory settings. If this does not work or if the recovery partition is gone, you will need to reload the os from scratch with windows installation cd

Most likely it is under the Boot Device Configuration option.   If not, check the System Info.

Okay, got it!

1st Boot Device: RAID: ST1000DM003-9

So bios are already set to default?

Not necessarily.  It just means that your BIOS (the basic input/output system) of your system sees the drive and recognizes it enough to give you information about the drive.  FYI, that is a Seagate drive model number.

So, the BIOS sees the drive but it won't BOOT Windows from it.   Have you run the Dell Pre-boot diagnostics on the hard drive?   Just to rule out that it hasn't failed.

If the drive is fine but unable to get into Windows at all you may end up needing to reinstall it on that drive.  You did mention you have everything off it you need, right?

I did the diagnostics test and got a 0146 error code, but no validation code.

And to answer your other question, yes, I have taken everything I wanted off the drive so I'm fine with reinstalling the OS.

Hi,

You may want to check out this link and it's "fix" for the 0146 error code.  I can't guarantee they're correct, i don't know that site at all, but checking the HDD setting can't hurt.

If everything is set up correctly and you're still getting that error then you will need to reinstall the OS.

Good luck, I hope everything works out correctly for you.

Thank you for the link!

My one question though is when they say 'Goto BIOS', what are they referring to? I've looked under F2 and F12 and I haven't be able to find any option that allows me change the status of the drive.
