Broken hinge on Inspiron 6000

Does anyone have experience with sending their laptop to Dell for repair?  My Inspiron 6000 has a broken hinge...cannot close laptop because bad hinge torques frame around screen.  Would like to know what your experience has been with Dell repairs.  Thanks.

We gave up trying to find anyone at Dell who would help us get our Inspiron 6000 fixed. They are only interested in selling you a new computer. Guess what, I am going to buy a new computer but it won't be from Dell.  I think the way they handle repairs is insulting.  We did find The Parts People online (as mentioned in the newest post). THey were great - we ordered a new set of hinges and a screen frame and we got the parts in 6 days. We installed the new right hinge and the lid still wouldn't close. Upon closer inspection by my husband, he decided the hinge was all bound up and that was causing the problem. He put the old hinge on his vise and loosened it up, added a little silicone and we got it working. Apparently all those right hinges are bad. It is very easy to install the new hinge if you want to take a chance and order a set. They are only $14.95 on The Parts People website. If you are handy, you might want to try unbinding your hinge and re-installing it.

 So, I can use my old computer out of town and I will buy a new computer for home. Too bad it won't be a Dell. Sorry Dell, you lost this customer.

I had this problem after have a screen replaced. Dell came out and replaced it, only to have a repeat of the same problem after my warranty had expired!

Took my Dell 1525 apart myself to fix the hinges myself.

Here is what I found;

  •
    1. There is not enough strength in the small plastic area on the plastic LCD display cover to accommodate the stress that the hinge screws place in that area.
    2. The hinge was too tightly adjusted coming out of the factory.

The combination of the two issues has caused what I am now seeing posted on many forums a major problem with many owners of Dell 1525's and similar units.

If you are fortunate enough to catch the problem early, you can open up the unit and loosen  the tensioning nut (turn counter-clock-wise) on each hinge a little bit and that should keep the hinges from ripping the supporting screws from the plastic on the LCD display cover.

If you waited a bit too long like I did, you have to open up the unit and either have to glue the cracks in the plastic LCD display cover around the hinge area, then let the glue set up for a couple of days before reassembly or purchase a new plastic LCD display cover. In both instances you should loosen the adjustment nut slightly on each hinge before reassembly so the problem will not reoccur.

Below is a great web site to help you disassemble and reassemble the hinge area of the Dell 1525 laptop (or similar unit) if you want to tackle the problem yourself. If you are a bit handy you can probably handle the repair. If not, have someone else do it.  (Small screws and some delicate parts in that area) http://picasaweb.google.com/charlesdhouse.com/HingeRepair#slideshow/5367328186931257938
