C400 problems with video and docking station

I have a multiple C400's running XP SP2 that will not output to the monitor when docked.  I have tried using the Intel drivers from the Dell site, and the latest from the Intel site.  I have changing display resolutions, I have tried changing the setting in the Intel Extreme applet.  If I set it to use both monitor and notebook, dock it and boot up, it does not output to the monitor.  If I have the laptop screen up while it is docked, I can set it to use both notebook and monitor and it works.  If I shutdown, undock, boot up, I either get a black screen after logging onto XP, or I get normal output, but if I shutdown, dock and boot up, the monitor is blank again.

We are having this problem on multiple machines here lately.  We have tried using different docking stations, different monitors, we had Dell replace one of the motherboards - nothing is working.

What is the problem?  Solution?

Thanks,

Aaron.

Check the monitor and sleep/power option settings. I have found that XP by default turns on Hibernation and sleep. Check them out.

aamjohns, take a look at thread: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=latit_video&message.id=16727

I had to revert to the 830/855 Video driver v6.13.01.3162 8/14/2002 (IX2K3162.exe); This fixed the video swap issue, but I am not convinced it is stable under XP SP2... (BSOD's)

Well we have found out several things at our sites regarding these issues.

1)when c400's have to have a system board replaced they are being replaced with boards that have an updated chipset.  this causes xp to get really confused.  I don't have one just right now to test, but I suspect that the inf update utility from intel is needed to be run so that the os can properly identify and configure itself.  At that point you can either load the latest intel drivers or dell drivers

2)it seems that the drivers load some info into the "users" profile.  We can login with local admin account.  install the drivers and get everything working.  As soon as the client logs in the video "profile" goes corrupt.  by removing and reinstalling under the clients profile all seems well.

*edit* -- although there might be driver compatabilty issues with sp2.  Our systems are running sp1 and having the same experience.

During the rebuild I had run the chipset util, then all the newest drivers. However, I am going to try the Intel provided video driver (830M/855GM v14.7 08/31/2004  driver ver. 6.14.10.3889).

Interesting about the profile though; however originally before the rebuild when we had the issues with the SP2 upgrade (not the fresh integrated SP2 build) the user themselves had installed new/different drivers and that is when we had noticed "issues" (BSOD's and the display swap).

I will wait to hear on the news on the Intel driver, installed under the problem user's profile, and see what happens... (the user is off-site right now testing and I send the link to the driver...)

How did the testing go?  Thanks for the help and input.

Too early to tell if it bugs out; however apparently it (Intel v6.14.10.3889) doesn't correct the swap/display issue either.

Dell has (finally) posted new drivers:
Video: Intel Graphics Technology 830M, Driver, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Multi Language, Inspiron 2600, Latitude C400, X200, v.6.14.10.3889, A11
Release Date: 10/05/2004
R86397.EXE

This has the same rev number as the 8/2004 Intel version, so I don't know what/if there is a difference or if this fixes any of the issues mentioned in this forum thread.

Anyone tried this yet?

It seems different people have had different results ...depending on what you are willing to put up with.. black or blue screens ; )

It seems after so many revisions of drivers, they still haven't got a decent release (e.g. the earlier one does not have the switching display issue) - so why do the last few do??

I will repost (from another thread) my results:

Here are the results I had with various versions:
Platform: C400 BIOS A12 XP Pro SP2

Intel Graphics Technology 830M, v.6.14.10.3889, A11
Release Date: 10/05/2004
Description: Intel 830M(G) video driver for XP and W2K R86397.EXE (from Dell)
Testing: not yet - but is this diff from the Intel version below?

Intel's version 830M/855GM v14.7 driver version 6.14.10.3889 Win2k_xp147.exe (from Intel)
Release Date: 8/31/2004
Testing: did not fix f8/swap issue

Intel Extreme Graphics 855 GM, Graphics Technology 830M, Driver, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Multi Language, Inspiron 2600, Latitude C400, v.6.14.10.3762, A00 R78790.EXE
Release Date: 06/03/2004
Testing: did not fix f8/swap issue

Intel Graphics Technology 830M, v.6.14.10.3619, A10
Release Date: 12/15/2003
Description: Intel 830M(G) video driver for XP and W2K 12/09/2003 R70265.EXE
Testing: did not fix f8/swap issue

Intel Graphics Technology 830M, v.6.13.01.3162, A07
Release Date: 08/14/2002
Description: Intel 830M(G) Video Driver for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. 08/14/2002 IX2K3162.EXE
Testing: Display f8/swap works; sometimes BSOD's under XPSP2

So, as far as I heve seen the 6.13.01.3162 (IX2K3162.exe) is the only one that has proper display switching (dock/undock) functionality, but was not too stable (the BSOD's is what caused me to start testing in the first place).

However, since it was not frequent and the fresh XPSP2 builds have been more stable with the driver fresh (instead of various up/downgrades) - so far this is the version I have stuck with (for now). It was not acceptable for our users to dock with blank screens or have to lift the lid and go into suspend or try to poke somthing thin to reach the F8...

That said be ware that other users posted that this version did not work for them... so in effect there is NO solution...
Hello Dell / Intel ????

did anyone resolve this issue?  I'm having multiple C400 laptops with this display problem.  It's really annoying me and my fellow techies.

I have found a driver from 2002 and put those in.  I was able to successfully get it working properly by swapping on and off the docks.

The driver version I used was 6.13.01.3264 and it worked on both XP and 2K.

And also there is a key-combo that will allow you to switch screens without having to open up the laptop.

On the external keyboard you press "Scroll Lock" and "F8" at same time it performs the same function as "FN" and "F8".

That way it removes the need to open up the laptop.

good luck!

I have about 6 people at my work that have C400's and they all have got this Docking / Monitor swapping issue.  I have Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2 machines with the same issues.  I have rolled back drivers to the originals from Dell's Driver Cd's and upgraded the BIOS to A12 on all of them.  They continue to get the same problems.  A black screen after the Windows Logon out of the dock, or Fn+F8 when it is in the dock or out of the dock.  They work sometimes, sometimes they do not.  I changed all the 32 bit to 16 bit.  1024 x 768 to 800 x 600.  Changed the different dock profiles and still a very consistent issue.  It has gotten to the point that Dell should step in and take a look at this problem.  Maybe recall these machines like the C-Series Delta Electronic power supplies.

Do not bother responding if you are telling me elementary solutions, I have tried everything.

The latest driver (v....3889) did have an option to set hotkeys, therefore doing what you listed (from the external keyboard). However we didn't go with this because it was not consistant (i.e after another undock it didn't respond atfer using the local f8 do get the undock display up).
Since our desire is to have "original" functionality for the end-users this was decided not a solution (since we didn't want the glitch to happen say during a Council mtg etc.)

I agree, Dell ot Intel need to backup thier product.

According to Dell support they do not support SP2, claim Dell systems are untested for SP2 and recommend uninstalling it.
Unbelievable...
