C610 won't left click - but right click is ok

this is weird -
We have a couple of Dell C610 laptops running XP/Pro SP2
with a couple of users defined with passwords on each laptop.

On one laptop - all 3 of the left clicks don't work at laptop bootup,
and therefore we can't even login, since we can't "click" on the user icon.

The laptop boots - and displays our list of users on the machine with their icons.
We can hover over the icon, and it highlights, we just can't left click on it ??
touch pad double tap - NG
small click between space bar & touch pad - NG
large click below touch pad - NG

An external mouse works fine and the cursor & right clicks work on the touchpad ??

have you tried to reinstall your drivers for your touch pad? try this ---> http://ftp.us.dell.com/input/R49155.EXE

never used the Dell drivers... just the MS ones... and it's worked fine for years.
