CPU processors

umm well its been a while since ive looked at laptops and now that im looking to buy one, i find that there are way too many types of processors. wasnt there the centrino? but now its all core solo or duo.. what about dual core?? are they the same thing? can someone please help explain to me each type of processor for these laptops, especially from the most powerful to the least. thanks
P.S. would this battery recall thing affect me if i were to buy a laptop now?

Solo is better than Pentium M (under the centrino platform) Duo is effectively capable of doing two tasks in the same time Solo can do one task because of the dual cores. But it cannot do 1 task twice as fast as the solo.

Core was just a stop-gap. I personally would not purchase a laptop until they have the Core 2 processor available. Apple just announced Core 2 laptops the other day and I expect Dell to start selling their laptops within a few weeks.

Core 2 can run 32bit or 64bit versions of Windows XP and Vista. Core can only run 32bit software. Core 2 also supports VT which doesn't really mean much unless you use software like VMware to create multiple instances of an operating system on your system.

Also 32bit versions of XP have problems addressing more than 3 GB of memory. There are work-arounds but they can cause some issues. 64bit XP and 64bit Vista do not have this limitation. It has more to do with the fact that you're running in 32bit mode rather than something Microsoft did wrong.

Battery issues have been sorted out for some time now. Systems sold now do not have any of the batteries that were recalled.

I did.

I said the Pentium M was the lowest, then Core Solo, then Core Duo and finally Core 2 Duo is the best.

Actually there's an even lower end processor the Celeron M which is based on the Pentium M. And a processor that sort of ventures into the Pentium M territory, the Core Solo ULV, which runs at about 1.3GHz but consumes less power. It is only available in the sub-notebook computers like the Latitude D420.

haha ic... umm for the range of CPU speeds for the Core 2 Duo processors... is 1.6 low? compared to the dual core speeds for desktops ( 2.8 or 3.0 ghz) how do the 1.6 and 1.8 processors compare to desktop speeds.. thanks

It's a more efficient design. The clock speed is lower but the performance is higher. A 2GHz Pentium M is more like a 3GHz Pentium 4 in speed.

I'm getting a D420 with a U1300 Core Solo.  Can I upgrade it with a T2500 Core Duo I happen to have?  Thx in advance.
