Can't install Windows XP to 40GB Modular Bay HDD when inserted into D/Bay External Media Bay - affects d400, d600, and d800

Noticed some similar issues on the forum, so I thought I'd list mine too.

I'm trying to install Windows XP to a 40 GB modular bay HDD ( aka 2nd hard drive, Dell Part # A0245402 ) so that I can use it as a parallel install for data recovery on the Latitude D400, D600, or D800. Below is a list of the scenarios that worked, and scenarios that didn't work. Unless all scenarios work, I can't perform data recovery on the D400.

1. WORKS - install Windows XP to 40GB Modular Bay HDD when it's inserted into onboard modular bay slot of D600 or D800

2. DOESNT WORK - try to install Windows XP to 40GB Modular Bay HDD when it's inserted into D/Bay ( aka DBay or D-Bay) external media bay

For scenario 2, Ive tried many things to get it to work and failed:

- updated Firmware on D/Bay external media bay to A04

- updated BIOS for D800 to A10 - no effect. The D400 is running BIOS ver A05 and the D600 is running BIOS ver A12

- with USB emulation ENABLED, Windows XP installs, but throws a Blue screen error 0x0000007b (aka INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE )

-with USB emulation DISABLED, Windows XP won't even install - it throws the same error as discussed in Microsoft's KB article 244919, discussed here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;244919

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next? Without a solution, I'm afraid the D400 will eventually be left out in the cold, because the D400 doesn't support scenario 1 (mentioned above).

If and when you need to recover data from the on board/built in HDD on a D400 just move the drive to a desktop PC with the correct notebook drive to desktop drive adapter. I don't see why this would be that big of a deal. Also you could install the D400 drive in a notebook that does support booting from the media/modular bay drive and recover the data that way. Or sell the D400 before this becaomes a problem and buy a notebook that does support what you want to do.

How often do you have to do this type of thing??? Or are you looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

The problem is this.... if scenario 1 works, scenario 2 should also work. There must be a problem with the D/Bay External Media Bay. Dell needs to address this.

It seems the problem is related to USB Emulation settings in BIOS for the D-Series. It affects the D400, D600 ( when used with D-Port or D-Dock ), and D800 (stated in my subject line earlier).

I should also note that the C-Series external media bay (used for C400) doesn't have this problem.

Believe me, I've had to use parallel installs several times for the C-Series. I anticipate the same for the D-Series. It's much less work when you don't have to remove the main HDD.

Thanks for the feedback
