Can't set touch pad properties after I installed an external mouse

Hi
After I installed and attached a Microsoft basic optical mouse to my Latitude D600, I can't find any place to adjust properties for Alps touch pad.
There used to be an icon in the system tray depicting movement on touch pad which is gone now. In control panel, settings for mouse now shows settings related to external mouse.

I have tried Both BiOS settings : touchpad-PS2 and PS2 only.

How can I adjust porperties for touch pad now ?

To get the touch pad icon to display int he system tray you will need to double click on the apoint.exe file located at "c:\program files\apoint\apoint.exe".  Or you can go into the mouse properties in contol panel and once that opens select the Others tab and checkmark the Display icon in Task Bar.  If you do not have this option in your mouse properties and you do not have the c:\program files\apoint directory then you will need to get the software off from Dell's website.  Even though the picture in the mouse properties shows a picture of an external mouse the settings will be changed for both the touchpad and external mouse.

Thanks CSCTech. After a frustrating period of not being able to set, I had re-installed Alps driver which had restored the touchpad properties.
However, now I see apoint.exe and it should have worked earlier too. Thanks for the solution, I am sure sometime in future, this will come to my use.

I installed the latest driver and now get the touchpad icon in the system tray.  The problem I have is that I can't turn the pad on/off.  I have done this with other laptops before.  Oh, and the icon on my prior systems showed the touch pressure and location on the icon itself.  The icon on my current system does neither.

Dear CSC Tech,

I have the exact same problem as the original poster.  I installed a wireless MS mouse and keyboard yesterday via my docking station at work on my D600.  When I use my laptop at home, everything works with the touch pad exept the scroll functions and the page forward/back functions that I usually have activated.  I can no longer see the touch pad icon in the systems tray and can't find the icon for the touch pad in the control panels.  When I click on the "mouse" icon under control panel, options appear for the wirless MS mouse, not for the touch pad.

I tried to double click on the C:\program files/apoint/apoint.exe as you had recommended but nothing happens.

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Did you try installing Alps driver as I did? If not, try installing it from the Dell support CD. It should bring back the apoint icon in system tray.

Hi,

My question for you - does your new wireless keyboard/mouse have a PS2 plug or is it USB?  If its USB, you should be able to solve this problem.  If PS2, it will never be fully functional.  Even when you install the new alps driver and get the tray icon back, you won't be able to turn the touch pad on/off.

oh well, that could be the case. I am using a USB mouse, hence didn't face any issues.

I have a USB wireless mouse.    I called Dell and ended up reinstalling the driver via their website.  The gestures on the touchpad and the icon in the system tray have returned.  The only thing that doesn't work is the back/forward gesture even when I turn it on in the control panel.

For some strange reason, the touch pad driver from the Utilities disk didn't install properly.
