Changing the Service Tag with Asset

Have a Latitude D600 with an incorrect Service Tag. Believe it was one were I replaced the Motherboard and had to manually enter it. Anyway, I entered it incorrectly. I've tried to use the Asset program, but it won't let me change the Service Tag.

I get the following message, "Error: Cannot change the Asset/Service Tag. Please ensure the tag is in a correct format, and the SETUP password is disabled". I put in the correct Service Tag, from the bottom of the laptop, and I've looked in the BIOS for the "SETUP" password, but I don't have any passwords on the BIOS.

Any help would be great! :)

This downloaded program includes SVCTAG.EXE as well as the BIOS and Diagnostics. You use it in DOS to delete a Service Tag and then reset the correct one. Asset.com is strictly a one time shot for setting a Service Tag, and if you get it wrong, you are stuck unless you have this program available

leduke30,

Thanks for the info. I had the CD and it worked beautifully! Thanks again for the information. :)

I'm working on a C600 and I can't get the asset program to change the service tag using any of the methods mentioned here. I bought used parts off ebay, but I'm sure it's a dell motherboard and the correct model. I can set the owner and an asset tag, just not the service tag. It's out of warranty, so that's not an issue, I'm just a sticker for these things and want it right. Any other suggestions?

Use the command line:

asset /s xxxxx

...where xxxxx is the service tag number you want it to be.  The "/s" switch is sometimes undocumented.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I had tried that. I've been reading several places and though it had been mentioned in the thread. It doesn't work. Says that either the info is incorrect or that the system password is set. The password isn't set, as I can change the other settings (and the bios screen says disabled.)

When I use asset.com I get the error:  Cannot change the Service Tag.  Please ensure the tag is in the correct format, and the SETUP password is disabled.

As far as I know there is no setup password and all the other passwords int he BIOS are disabled.  The service tag I am trying to use is 44C2C01 which is in the proper format as far as I can tell.

When I use svctag.exe I get an error in EEPROM Erase Program Version 3.6 that says "Cant allocate memory to save flash (failure at 499)" Then I have to reboot.

I have googled and researched to no avail - please help!

You can not change the Service Tag on a board which has one already set by using Asset.com; you can only set one on a board where there is none installed. To change a Service Tag on a board you buy with one already set to the one assigned to your laptop when it left Dell, you need a software called SVCTAG.EXE and that is only available on Dell Service Tech CDs generally

When I use svctag.exe it brings up the EEPROM Erase Program and gives me the error saying it can't allocate memory to save flash (failure at 449)

Somewhere in the life of this laptop someone set its service tag in the BIOS to "FIELD" all I am trying to do is change it back to it's proper service tag number.  I have not changed the board - although I have replaced the keyboard, but I don't think that should pose a problem.
