Charger randomly doesn't work
Hi everyone.
I have an XPS 15 (bought from the refurbished 2nd hand outlet) and it's working fine...apart from one thing. Most of the time, the charger won't charge the battery; rarely though, if I plug/unplug many times over, it'll spring into life.
So far as I know, I haven't damaged the charger. Tech support isn't much help as the service tag registers as being purchased outside the EU (which is odd, but I suppose that's due to it being refurbished. I'm definitely in England, though).
Anyone have an idea what to do? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I can't find where to register outside of the US, though - am I just being blind?

Ah, gotcha. Thanks again. Once it's been approved will that let me get around the Service Tag not registering as bought in the UK, then?

First thing would be to get the system registered in your name.
Next would be to have them replace the AC adapter -- and if that doesn't solve the problem, the system board.
DO NOT let the problem go - it will eventually result in total failure to charge the battery.

A couple things might cause the issue. Are you using the original AC adapter that came with the laptop, or are you using a universal replacement adapter (like a Targus, Energizer, etc) ? Some universals don't provide the right voltage or enough current to charge the battery. Sometimes you will notice with these that the battery will charge when the laptop is off, but not while on. Or sometimes a bad / faulty AC adapter can cause a laptop to not charge (if it's outputting the wrong voltage, or not enough current)
The other thing that comes to mind is a bad DC-DC converter / charging circuit on the motherboard. It's not TOO common, but we see a couple a month come through my shop with it .
If the problem still exsit, the only thing you can do is purchase a new laptop adapter and hope it can help you.
