Combo Jack Audio Adapter not working

I recently bought a StarTech Headset adapter for my dell alienware 15 laptop to make it so I could use my headphones in my combo jack. I plug my headphones into the adapter, then into the laptop and I hear static. That is the only noise they play though. Sound still comes out the laptop's speakers and when I try to change playback devices there is nothing but the speakers in the laptop. Any help getting this to work would be appreciated.

Hello. You do not need an adapter to use headphones. An adapter is needed to use a microphone that has a TRS (tip ring sleeve) plug.

If your headphones are known to work when plugged into other devices but will not work when plugged into your combo jack, either the jack is defective or the audio driver is (unless you have Windows 10 which has all kinds of audio problems including the headphone jack not working).

Go to the Alienware 15 support page and use the blue "Change OS" to select your operating system, then download a fresh copy of the Creative audio driver from the Audio category. If the jack still will not work after installing the driver then contact tech support if the laptop is still under warranty.

Thanks turns out it was a driver issue. Thanks for the help.
