Get you a can of compressed air and blow it into the intake for the fan. The heatsink will get clogged with dust and stuff and not cool the processor properly. That should take care of it.
Oh, and BTW, that program is nice too because it constantly will monitor your CPU temperature down in the toolbar. If your computer does start ever getting too hot again you will notice it and can save all your files and shut it down properly--or start trying to cool it off--before it goes ka-BOOM!
If that doesn't work try http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html. My Inspiron 1100 was doing the exact same thing but after getting that program up and running it, so far, hasn't done it again. Of course my fan is running all the time now and will probably need to be replaced in a year or two, but it's better than just losing all the data your working with suddenly and having to cool your computer down all the time.
I'm paranoid over this now so I run that program plus blow compressed air into the thing every other week.
you are dealing with a known issue for the 5100 machine. refer to this website for the complete explanation and solution. if you have the time, fill out the guest book, and send dell the complaint letter (generic letter is on the site).
