If you didn't do so, run an extended hard drive diagnostic - it sounds very likely the root cause of the original and this problem is the same - a bad hard drive. F12 at powerup.
I am not sure how I can replace the HD since I only have a Windows repair program rather than the full program. My guess is that I need the full program to reload on a new HD. Please advise.
I just ran a hard drive diagnostic and it failed the DST short test. There was a code 1000-0146. Not sure what this means or if the computer can be saved.

If the system is under warranty, report the error to Dell and they will send you a replacement drive that should be preloaded.
If not, you will need a new drive and the Windows DVD/CD. You can get the latter from Dell - in the US, see
