Computer will not Power Up and I get BLINKING LIGHTS.

Yesterday we were making a long distance trip. I had a lot of work to do so I took my laptop along. I have an auto adaptor. So, about 1/2 way to our destination, my auto adaptor came loose and when it did my computer started working on battery power. I reached down and plugged the adaptor back in and when I did, the computer would not revert back to the regular power. I tried several times to restart the computer and get it to revert back to the regular power but it would not. So, I continued working on battery. We had an event to attend and when it was over we went to our friends hotel room to visit for a while and I plugged my computer into an outlet to see if it would charge the battery and revert back to AC power. It would do NEITHER. Of course I was able to continue to work on the computer as long as the battery was viable... and it continued to be okay for another 30 minutes.

I am now home. I plugged my computer using my ac adaptor and when the battery is in and plugged in... and I try to turn it on, I get a yellow battery light. When I take out the battery I get the power light blinking and the battery light blinking in green. When the battery is IN...and I try to turn it on  I get a yellow-orange battery light for a short time and then it turns the light off. The AC adaptor has a solid green light on it. I do not believe that the adaptor is bad because when I use it... the power lights change depending on what I try to do!!

My daughter has the same computer as I do. I tried putting her battery into my computer and I get a blinking lights again. The computer will not power up at all! I just put the battery into my daughters computer to see if her computer will charge it up and the GREEN light, where the battery goes, came on like it is supposed to on her computer.

What do you think is up?

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 5100. I am attempting to recharge the battery on my daughter's computer. What do you mean by replace... take out and reinstall everything. I do not have 2 of everything!

Hopefully the system is under warranty, because it is likely the mainboard has failed. What model is this?

Remove and replace everything you can - RAM, battery, cards, drives. If that doesn't solve the problem, call Dell - the system needs repair.

The system has another 566 days under the full warranty!

By replace, I mean reseat - remove and reinsert.

If you're under warranty, call Dell - the system likely needs to go back for repair (or to have a technician sent to you, if you have an onsite warranty).

Yes, it was the motherboard... I have around 565 days left on my warranty... They sent me a new adaptor... I returned the old... and on Tuesday they sent me a box to return the laptop and so I did... and I received the laptop back on Friday.. repaired and working WONDERFULLY... I was allowed to keep my hard-drive so I didn't lose any important work...
I am very happy with how this problem was handled!!

YEAH!! It's all working and back to normal... whatever normal is! HAHAHAAH!

I ran into a similar symptoms on my Inspiron 8200, only in my case the cause was some sort of a power problem connecting to an unreliable generator. My warranty has expired, but thankfully I found some assistance on this forum from someone who said to try replacing the DC Power Board. And this worked! I ordered my replacement part from parts-people.com, paid for overnight delivery, and it arrived the next day. Overall cost: roughly $50. So FYI, The entire motherboard may not need replacing in this situation.

sorry, my bad... the replacement part is a DC Charger Board, not a DC Power Board.
