Connecting XPS 13 (9350) to 4K monitor using Thunderbolt 3

The new XPS 13 (9350) has adopted a Thunderbolt 3 port instead of Mini DisplayPort for connecting external monitors. The XPS 13 web page states:

Thunderbolt™ 3 supports:
        Power in / charging
        PowerShare
        Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps bi-directional)
        USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps)
        Native DisplayPort 1.2 video output
VGA, HDMI, Ethernet and USB-A via Dell Adapter (sold separately)

It goes on:

Thunderbolt™ 3 multi-use port allows you to charge your laptop, connect to multiple devices (including support for up to two 4K displays) and enjoy data transfers up to 40Gbps, 8 times that of a USB 3.0.

I now want to make use of the "Native DisplayPort 1.2 video output" in order to connect a 4K monitor, but it seems to be impossible.

After many hours on the phone to various departments in Dell, I'm assured that they don't sell any Thunderbolt 3 accessories yet. They'll be releasing a Thunderbolt 3 dock next year (TB15), but for now the best they can offer is a USB-C to HDMI adapter, which only supports a maximum resolution of 1080p.

So... the sales blurb says this laptop natively supports DisplayPort 1.2, but how are we meant to use it?

I'm using the p2715q. The option is only available when you are connected to the display port or mini display port interface. When you connect via HDMI, the option is disabled.

Great 3 months in and no HDMI support? These adapters go for $99 in Australia! Would have been good to have at least Micro HDMI support like all the other Ultrabooks on the market.

At least with the Asus Zenbook it came with Micro HDMI to HDMI adaptor and USB to Ethernet included with the laptop.

I have the XPS 13 9350 laptop. How do you disable MST on an Acer cb280ck 4k monitor? I am using the Cable Matters usb 3.1c to hdmi. It works but only 1080.

I get this shown on monitor.  3840x2160  30hz and 67khz  V30hz. This is all too confusing. My display looks good to me but I know it's not right. Going to return my monitor.

Hello,

i also have an issue with my DELL XPS13 (9350) with the DA200 and a Acer 2K Monitor.

With my old XPS15 from 2013 i could get 2560x1440 at 55Hz via manual profile - with the XPS13 and DA200 i only can get (with the same cable) 2560x1440 @ 40Hz - so whats wrong here ?! Does the DA200 nott support 4k ?!

I have a Dell U3011 and a U3014 monitor. When I connect the XPS13 via an adapter to the U3011 it works normally. When I connect the U3014 there is nothing. It won't even detect an external monitor. Sometimes the U3014 gets into a locked state where the only solution is to cycle the power.

I am assuming that the U3011 and the U3014 use a different version of the DP protocol?

Dell XPS13 (9350), with Intel 540 graphics, all drivers are updated (not as per Dell procedure). Windows 10 x64.

When connecting my Samsung 27" 1080p external screen though the USB-C to HDMI adapter the screen works as advertised @60Hz. Unfortunately like many other users are complaining, occasionally both laptop and external screen go black for few seconds and then the image restores. This occurs randomly. Sometimes screens are on for 20-30 min with no glitch, sometimes they blackout every minute or so. This happens only when external screen is connected. The adapter used on the Thunderbolt end is "no brad" Chinese imitation. I thought if I buy Dell adapter (DA200) or the dock (TB15) my problems will be solved but some online reading actually makes me believe the issue is not in the Chinese adapter but the drivers supplied by Dell.

Can anyone update what's the status of this (widespread) "external screen on USB-C blacking out" situation. Thanks!

Have you got your mobile phone near to your monitor? If so then try moving it away.

I don't think it is related, but for the sake of eliminating possibilities the phones were moved away. Blackouts continued.

However I noticed that the screens (both built in and the external) stay firmly on while the WiFi is in use, e.g. I'm watching video stream from YouTube. The moment the network is in low mode or not in use, the screens blackout again. Go figure...

Is this still an issue?  I was going to purchase a Dell XPS 13 touch, but will go with Lenovo think pad T460s if I can't use my cinema HD display. Really hope this is fixed.

Well fast forward several months and the TB15 has been released and I purchased one along with my XPS 9550.  What a nightmare!  The thing shipped with a defective cable and I've wasted the past three months going back and forth with Dell's (rather incompetent) tech support trying to get a replacement cable to no avail.  Now Dell is fdinally admitting there is a "Known Issue" for the Thunderbolt dock and is offering to refund the purchase price.  If it's even still available I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT BUYING THE TB15 Thunderbolt Docking Station.

It's easy..I have an XPS 13 touch. I have a Thunderbolt to displayport adapter, and connect to a Dell 4k monitor using the mini Displayport. Works like a charm

P.S. The adapter is a Visiontek and was under $20

FYI:

I wrote in before asking what adapter to use between my XPS 9350 and my Acer cb280ck. I am now using the Cable Matters 201018-blk from Amazon. It is $24.99.

The Acer monitor says I am at 3840x2160 30hz and h:67khz v:30hz.

I set my display setting on the laptop at 3840x2160.

This looks good to me but I am not sure I have the best display. It looks very good. Don't know how to tell if I have the best 4k display. I think I am satisfied unless someone tells me I can do better.
