Crash! Smash!!

I nosedived into a marble floor last week along with my laptop (D410). While I'm healing ok, my laptop screen is shattered and the lid is bent (concave with screen on inside). It still works and I'm using Remote Desktop to access the machine but am worried about getting the screen replaced then finding components failing afterwards due to the shock of the fall.

If I open the machine up, what should I look for in terms of potential damage? Any ideas about testing it out?

Thanks,

Tony.

Hi Tony - glad to hear you're healing fine. About the laptop, if you purchased "Complete Care" when you purchased the laptop...you can have the LCD replaced at no expense. If not, then of course you'll need to have the LCD replaced at your expense. I've replaced many LCD panels and have found that not much more than the LCD needs replacing...very seldom does the cabling need to be replaced. You have a few options when purchasing the LCD. You can purchase one from Dell or buy one elsewhere. I've purchased quite a few "generic" LCD panels for Dell, Gateway and HP and they've all worked fine. The generic panels I've bought have come from eBay...so take your time and find one that will meet specs. Good luck!

If you don't have Complete Care you can find most parts here.

The CD drive and the hard drive are the most likely parts to be damaged from shock. If the CD drive does not have read errors you should be fine. Listen for strange noises from the Hard drive.
