Creating a Win8.1 and Win7 dual boot

With the system cited, I would like to create a bootable partition for Windows 7.  I used shrink volume and created a 150GB partition for Windows 7.  The install would not complete saying system components were incompatible.  Perhaps setting in the F2 setup menu need to be changed.  Any help would be apprreciated,

Why? The desktop side of Win 8 is equal to or better than Win 7. In addition, MS will update both this summer. The only way to not have this is to turn off updates for a year.

The reason, KirkD, is I develop content for 10 year old legacy Microsoft Train Simulator community.  The program doesn't work with 8.1 and until the open source replacement, called OpenRails has editing capability, the editing GUI in MSTS has to be used.

When I bought this system in January, Dell tech service walked me through retrograding the system with my retail copy of Windows 7.  The computer worked, so did the simulator.  Within several weeks, I decided to abandon Windows 7 and reinstalled the factory configuration; after all, that's what I paid for.

I have everything I need working on a Dell XPS desktop Windows 7 system, but I need portability for periods of time.

When installing for dual boot, the older OS must be installed, then the newer. The reason is that the second OS MUST know about the first. This is why you are having problems. Win 7 never heard about Win 8. I read somewhere that you could do it backwards by making modifications to the boot loader or use a third party not loader; don't remember the details. You could do a web search.

A second  (or first) thing to try would be to install your application in Win 8.1 using Compatibility Mode. You need to both install and run in Compatibly Mode. If you need help on this, post back.
