Don't have one, but it looks like it should work without a replicator from this picture. I prefer something a lot smaller myself that I can carry in a case...the Traveler coolpad. The D/View stand looks like it doesn't elevate the bottom of the laptop to provide cooling.

yes, that makes much better for cooling and is much easier to pack. However, what I am looking is exactly what it does...elevates the screen so high as if that would be LCD monitor. Sure, I cannot use the keyboard, but that is fine. If there is another product doing it...let me know!

You definitely need the port replicator. Replicator attaches the the stand, laptop to the port replicator, just like the replicator was on a desktop. There's no way to attach the laptop to the stand without the port replicator

Thanks for the followup and correction of my WAG. Pictures can be deceiving!

When I first saw in brochure of this D/View I saw it as a separate unit and thought that 60 dollars is not such a bad investment. However, now when I go to website and look for technical specifics they mention something about port replicator?!?! Com'on!

Seriously, is there no way that i can attach the laptop to the D/View and simply use it!?

I did additional research on the net and check out this picture . I defiantly shows the stand in its simplicity. I also see some hook-type-looking things on the stand which would indicate that I can put my laptop on the stand. Are there still those who can defiantly tell me that there is no way to attack the notebook to the stand without getting Port Replicator? I need to know that b/c I want to buy one...but not really planning to purchase some port replicator...no need for that!

janislanka,               I am with you . It sure looks to me as if it would work. It looks pretty straight forward. This past Sunday I called Dell trying to order one but first thought that I would ask a Dell rep about it . Well after 3 calls and not being able to get an answer I finally gave up out of disgust for the total incompetince that I was experencing from them. I will probably look elsewhere.

Yes, I can definitely tell you that.. Those hooks you are looking at are for attaching the port replicator to the stand. There is NO WAY you can use those to attach the laptop - they point DOWN. They hook over the back lip of the port replicator; that think in the middle that you see is the hook that connects to the other side of the port replicator, such that the port replicator is "trapped" between them (there's a spring release to get the port replicator back out).

I can't fathom why anyone would want the stand and not the port replicator; with the port replicator, you have no cables to plug in. If you're going to use the stand, you pretty much have to use a keyboard & mouse (given the angle the laptop is at, it's almost inconcievable that you can use the pointer & keyboard on the laptop). Add in power, and that's three cables you have to connect when you put the thing on the stand. That's the whole point of a port replicator.

Ai ai ai, that's all I can say. Laptop comes with two USB ports and one serial port. Seriously, sometimes we have to question DELL if all that they make is reasonable. Port Replicator...not reasonable. If they would make the stand so that you can put laptop there just by itself...simple an dbeutiful. think...don't buy every single thing just b/c it is made.

To each his or her own, I guess. I will only buy laptops for which full APRs exist, because I'm lazy. I want to drop the laptop in the APR and have everything connected in one click. It's not about having more holes, it's about having fewer - I only have ONE to worry about (the laptop<->APR connection). Plugging/unplugging lots of cables when I want to go mobile or come home is far too much hassle. I couldn't imagine suffering through using something like the D/View without an APR - even more hassle trying to get the cables into the back of the laptop in the stand.

I'm so blasted lazy that I bought two APRs - one for work (where I use the D/View) and one for home (where I don't really have room for the D/View)

Now, there's that whole issue about whether or not the APR works right (I had to get my motherboard replaced on my brand-new 8600 to get it working right), but assuming the APR actually works, this solution is as close to ideal as I could imagine...
