Hi,

You may have either a faulty motherboard, a faulty charger or a faulty plug. The battery could also be faulty.

The middle pin of the power plug (the thin one) carries data (to the best of my knowledge) so that the laptop can identify the adaptor and check that its the right kind.
If that pin is bent or missing then the laptop and the charger will not "talk" and charging will not take place.
If the motherboard is faulty, there may be a loose contact between the socket and the board (more unlikely).
If the adaptor itself is faulty, then you will need a new adaptor.

I recommend you:
- Test your charger with another laptop and test your laptop with another charger (if you can find another).
- If the charger is faulty, get a replcement on warranty. Failing that, you can get them in the Dell Shop for about £17.
- If the laptop motherboard is faulty, contact Dell and get them to replace your motherboard on warranty pronto.
- If you believe the battery is faulty, get Dell to send a replacement one on warranty. (This would be my first port of call)

You should also keep an eye out for BIOS updates- they can sometimes fix these issues.
