Hello ttaylor4,

Welcome to the Dell Community Forum,

Once the external display goes off after you remove the check from extend my desktop, try the Fn-F8 (toggle function). Hope that this helps.

Thanks,

I have exactly the same problem.  I can uncheck the extend desktop to this dispaly, the external display goes blank, but then I go back to that external display (Fn F8) the extended desktop reappears.  The extended desktop is great when you want it, but for making presentations I want to see the same display on the LCD screen that is projected to others.  While there may be a way to do that with extended desktops it's not intuitive.  I just want to be able to go back to the default situatin where whatever is displayed on my LCD screen can also be displayed on an externa monitor or projecter.  Can anyone help?

We've had this problem with many of our D600's, can't nail it down but can reproduce it by either enabling multiple desktops once or connecting the laptop to an external device that doesn't support the 1400x1050 native resolution. FN+F8 gets you either display but not both cloned. Found a simple way to get clone working again

1. Login as user

2. If extended desktop is enabled, disable it on the 2nd screen. Set 1st screen resolution to 1024x768 and apply changes.

3. Runas Display properties as Local Administrator
(the administrator, user with admin rights doesn't work)

4. Goto advanced display properties, click on the ATI tab labeled "Displays"

5. Set scheme "Default Single Display" and apply changes.

6. Click on the little "red button" on the upper left of your external device (mine says "monitor" and is located directly left of "Panel" and above "TV") and apply changes.

By this point, I've got the clone output going with FN+F8. However it will break if you re-enable extended desktop or change resolution back up to 1400x1050

I'm not sure why admin users can't see any ATI properties, or why external displays enable entended desktop at 640x480, 256colors by default. I'm hoping someone with Dell or ATI could provide a better answer.
