D600 boot will not load ACPI - need guidance

My trusty D600 hangs during boot. I am able to boot into safe mode (w/o networking). Boot log shows AGP440.SYS to be the last driver to load. Next is ACPI which can not or will not load. Suggestions needed.

OS is XP-Pro Sp3. Sorry, I knew better than to leave that out.  Not sure about the graphics drivers. My brief investigation suggests ACPI to be a BIOS component.

Hi daukamp,

Welcome to Dell community!

May I know the operating system installed in the computer?

Since the computer is booting in Safe mode, try uninstalling the graphics drivers and check if it boots to windows in normal mode.

Hi daukamp,

Since you have mentioned that the boot log shows AGP440.SYS being the last driver to load, I suspect the issue could be due to corrupted graphics drivers. Please follow the below mentioned steps to uninstall the graphics drivers:

  1. Click “Start”, right click “My Computer”, and then click “Properties”
  2. In the “System Properties” window, click “Hardware” tab, and then click “Device Manager”
  3. In Device Manager window, expand “Display adapters”
  4. Right click the graphics drivers and click “Uninstall”
  5. Ensure to check the box for “Delete the driver software for this device” and click “Ok”
  6. Restart the computer and check if it boots to windows in normal mode.
  7. If it does, refer the following link to download and install the graphics drivers: http://dell.to/1dQzWAU

Please post the results.

I Attempted procedure as described to no avail. Graphic adapter is Radeon 9000. I tried to uninstall and when that didn’t work found that I could disable it by clicking Radeon properties. Neither the uninstall nor the disable options from this Radeon menu solved my problem but I did get rid of the Radeon circuit. Still not sure any AGP440 software has been removed. Either way, same problem exists as it hangs at AGP-440 just as before.
I should add that since the initial failure a small “locked” symbol with the number 9 in it appears on the display near the on/off button when I attempt to boot in normal or safe modes. It disappears when the boot process stops. I’m sure that means something but I have no idea what. Also, while trying to activate the diagnostic routine several weeks ago using F-12, I somehow caused the display to shrink to about 5x7 instead of full screen and have not been able to get back to full screen since.

Hi daukamp,

Does the display appear shrunk in system BIOS? Restart the computer and tap F2 key at the Dell logo to enter the BIOS. Also, if you have an external monitor, connect it to the laptop and check the display output on the external monitor.

Please run diagnostics on the computer to rule out hardware failure. There are two methods to start the Onboard Diagnostics in Latitude D600:

  1. Hold the Mute button while powering on the system
  2. Restart the computer and tap F12, and then choose "Diagnostics" from the one time boot menu

We can try a clean boot from Safe mode and check if the computer can boot to normal mode. Refer the following link for clean boot instructions: http://dell.to/17HDH4n

Do let me know the results.
