D620 Dual-Monitor Mode: Setting external LCD as primary montior and D620 screen as secondary

Problem...

When connecting a second, external monitor to a D620, the Windows XP wants the D620 to remain as the primary screen and the external monitor as secondary.  In otherwords, your taskbar and desktop view stays on the D620 when you really want it to show up on your external montior and use the D620 as an extended desktop.  Although WinXP Display Settings|Properties advertises an option to change which monitor is Primary and Secondary, the D620 hardware apparently overrides these settings and keeps the D620 screen as primary....that is unless you know the solution...

1. Have ONLY the laptop screen enabled (using display->settings-> ensure that the "extend my windows desktop..." is NOT checked.
2. Using the laptop keyboard switch the output of the screen to be the external video display ONLY by using the Fn+F8 key (or similar combination).
3. The laptop screen should go OFF and the external monitor should go ON.
4. Now change the Display Settings|Properties and ensure that the primary output is going to the external montior.
5. Now select the second screen using the "Display" drop-down box (or click on the graphic) and choose the second entry.
6. Click on the "extend my windows..." box and the laptop screen will become active and default to the second screen in the system.

Set up the screen resolutions as required. Drag and Drop the screen graphics to match your physical hardware configuration (i.e. is screen 2 to the right or left of screen 1?)

NOTE1:  When you run in single-screen mode, the D620 will always use its monitor as the primary.

NOTE 2:  When you reboot with an external montior plugged in, Windows will not conduct the Extended Desktop configuration until after a successful log-in and some other background stuff.....be patient, if you shut down with Extended desktop enabled, a restart with the secondary monitor plugged in should recover the extended desktop on its own...it might just take a few seconds.

NOTE3:  Unfortunately, during a reboot of the D620 with a secondary montior plugged in, Windows XP is not keeping the physical location settings of the monitors.  In other words, if your config is setup D620 on Left and Monitor on Right, Windows XP will recover with the D620 on Right and Montior on left.....you'll need to go back into Display Settings|Properties and drag/drop the D620 monitor to the left to again tell XP what your physical hardware configuration is.  ...Minor nuisance.
