D620 stuck in setup mode with windows 7

At this point I get a blue set up screen but the keyboard is dead and cannot navigate. I tried Boot menu using Power and Fn key combo but in every mode my keyboard is non-operational.

My laptop is about 6-7 yrs old.

Any helop appreciated.

With my keyboard dead and not able to set boot menu, how do you advise I install OS on it?

Plug in a USB keyboard.

I already mentioned that even the USB keyboard does not work so that is no solution!

Disconnect the A/C adapter.

Remove the Battery

Hold down the power button for  30 seconds.

Reconnect the A/C adapter

Power it up and see if you get  functionality of the keyboard.

If not then remove the A/C adapter

and re seat the keyboard cable.

Hi,

I already went thru these steps multiple times and also removed keyboard, re-seated memory, disconnected and reconnected battery, AC adapter all that several times.

Looks like I am going in circles!!!!

Then I would suggest your try a known good keyboard.

I already hooked up (as I said above) couple of external USB keyboards. I dont think keyboard is the issue. Something to do with BIOS not recognizing it...

Thanks

You mean with internal keyboard removed with an external (USB) keyboard plugged in and then reboot?

Try boot it with the keyboard removed and  it plugged into an external keyboard.

So here is an update.

I did what you suggested after some trial and error. One challenge was how to power up the laptop (let me know if you have any suggestions around it) with the keyboard cable removed.

I was able to run diagnostics (of course only with external keyboard and found no issues. Re-installed older back up version etc but to no avail. But since I was able to use the external keyboard (as I am doing now), I was able to type in my password and log in.

So two questions remain:

1. How do I confirm my keyboard is the issue (I have not shut my laptop down for fear of losing control) and how much does a replacement keyboard (can I buy a refurbished/used one?)?

2. If my keyboard is disconnected, how do I power the laptop with external keyboard?

Thanks

Hi atulp,

With the Internal keyboard removed if the system is powering on then I‘d suggest that you reseat the internal keyboard and check for the issue.

If the system does not work with internal keyboard connected then the issue may be due to faulty keyboard or keyboard slot on motherboard.

I’d require the system service tag to suggest you the correct keyboard for replacement.

I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name ‘DELL-Ravi Ch’ highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

I am sending you a private message as well. Click on “Inbox” to respond to the message and provide the system’s Service Tag and contact details so I may access your system records and check for further course of action. You could also click on Start Conversation to send a private message. Please let me know if this helps.

Hi Ravi

I already ordered a new keyboard online, however, as you said if the issue is the connector on the mother board, then that might not help.

At this point I have to leave the laptop open where I plug the keyboard in to power up the unit, then quickly unplug it and then use external keyboard. Is there a way to power the unit with external keyboard? This way, even if the new keyboard does not work, I can use the unit.

Is there a way to diagnose where the problem is with the keyboard (i.e. connector or the keyboard or a specific key)? I have run diagnostics and it does not seem to recognize the keyboard if I plug it in after the unit is powered on.

Thanks
