D830 hangs when inserting AC adapter

Offen when I insert the AC power adapter into the laptop while Windows is running, the computer completely freezes.  The screen remains on the last displayed screen, but no numlock, ctrl-alt-del, no disk activity.

When removing / reinserting the power, only the brightness of the screen changes.

To recover, I have to press the powerbutton for 4 seconds.

Have this problem with BIOS A08 and A10.

Running Windows XP Pro SP2, fully patched.  Except for the drivers, no other Dell software/utilities are installed.

Try a different adapter.  If the problem persists, the laptop motherboard may be defective.  If the problem goes away, then there was a defect in the adapter.

It sounds like some kind of hardware problem, so I doubt any software is going to fix it.  You can always uninstall it later after you verify that it doesn't help your situation, I guess.

I've spoke with Dell Support and they advise to install the Dell Support tools, which also installs the Dell power profiles.  Do you think this might help?

(I don't think so, and don't want to load my machine with these mostly useless things..)
