DELL DOCK Problems

I have a DELL Studio 17 which came installed with DELL DOCK 2.0.   Recently it stopped working and could not even send the error report.

I spent a lot of time dealing with DELL SUPPORT and through e-mail support was able to finally uninstall the product and was told to first install the original version and then upgrade.  I installed the DELL DOCK 1.0 and was upgraded to a newer DELL DOCK 1.0.  I still could not get V2.0 to install or work.

I used the Windows Install Clean up utility to get rid of the program but it still has pieces throughout my sstem.

When I called back for help, I was told it was a software problem and they wanted $100 plus to fix my system since it was purchased on a deal which does not have the option of software support.

Right now, I can not install DELL DOCK (any version) since it says it is already installed.  The program list does nto show it.  The PROGRAMS AND FEATURES entry in the CONTROL PANEL does not show it.

I have two version partially installed on my system and they show up in both the PROGRAM FILES directory and the PROGRAM FILES (x86) directory.

DELL's final answer was to wipe out my whole system with the image restore.  NO WAY.  I have updated to WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL, and added several programs to my system since then.  Not to mention the hassle of reloading all that info.

I know that there must be some fragments left on the system that are preventing this from working.  I also know that it could be cleared up with someone who had the knowledge of DELL DOCK.

So, I'm dead in the water with no futher help from DELL unless I spend more than $100 on a $700 computer that is less than 3 months old.

WHAT A RIP OFF.

Any body have this problem and get it cleaned up without paying the $$$$ to DELL?

The Dock is software and that is not warrantied. Only the hardware is covered. It's not worth spending any time or money on this. The Dock is OK, but totally unnecessary. You can live without it. Everything you need is in Windows 7. Everything that's in the dock shortcuts is also in windows 7. The Dock is not used with Windows Professional, AFAIK. It's more a crutch for new home users. You should forget about it.

PS Your problem might have been caused by the uninstaller program.

Took a ride and came back and looked at things.

I renamed the DellDock directory under PROGRAM FILES (x86).  Once I did that, the original DELL DOCK version 1.0 loaded and installed again.  I then updated it with the latest Version 1 software and it is working.

I just can't get the Version 2.0 software working.  I have Version 2 running fine on my XP system.  So, this is something that Dell probably rammed on the Windows 7 systems without a good check out.

Anyway, I'm tired of playing with this now.

I have the Windows 7 Pro version and it (version 2.0) ran fine on it before.

Instead of giving any money to Dell, I'll buy a book on the Windows 7 registry and figure out what to delete so I can properly rid myself of the back problems.  At that point I should be able to load and install the Dell Dock 2.0 software on my Windows 7 system.  Many of the control files underlying the program are XML and I am familiar with that type of code.  I should be able to figure it out.  If I do, I'll post a clean solution here.

WHY DO I USE DELL DOCK?  I got use to it.  Made nice ICONS for my tabs and got lazy.  I can use the standard interface, but I was just getting usde to it.

DELL has loss me as a future customer because of their failure to back up the utilities that they put on the system.  Hardware/Software warranty is not the issue.  Helping their customer with a problem that they can solve easily and caused by their product that they installed without my request, but holding them for a ranson of $100+ dollars to fix a $20 utility is nonsense!

That's enough for today!

Found the XML script for the DELL DOCK under Documents.  Modified the script to handle my new icons and now version1 is looking like version 2 and running just fine for now.  With time, I'll go back and get version 2 to work.  AND, didn't pay an extra dime for it.

My 1st & last Dell product. Ready to MAC. Very glitchy M5010. 2 months old. Dock error, & they want $$ to fix. The SRS Premium sound, "Premium?". I have a small notebook with better sound. One by one each software program is failing or beginning to trigger errors. Dell is gouging customers. Even w/ warranty Dell wants $$ to fix or use tech support. Glad I saved my 4 yearold Sony. It unfortunately works better than this system, just slower.

Have you tried using the likes of CCleaner or Revo Uninstaller (Free Version or maybe better to use 30day trial of the pro version, you can get from softpedia) to clean your system and uninstall all instances of Dell Dock. (Cclenaer has a registry cleaner also)

Then to reinstall it via downloading the latest version on their website.

The Dell Dock is made by Stardock, if you really liked the Dell dock it is worthwhile looking at their products. They have free versions of most things "Fences" in particular is nice.
