DELL VOSTRO 1310
Hi,
would appreciate your help on the following:
Just bought a Dell Vostro 1310 for business reasons with 128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS.
As I now found out this Laptop doesnt have a HDMI slot.
My question now is how to connect this laptop with a 47" LCD TV and how get the best picture quality.
Is the graphiccard FullHD?
How will be the quality in the TV when I have connected the Laptop?
Do I need a docking station?
Or do I need a combination cable with one side HDMI and other side DVI (but is Vostro 1310 DVI compatible)?
Many questions - hope you have an answer for me.. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums :emotion-21:
It's confirmed here, that the 8400GS is easily capable of outputting full HD (1900 x 1200) :emotion-5:
As for DVI/available video connection? Didn't you check the specs before you bought it?
Anyways... as seen here, it doesn't have a DVI port either (click on the third picture from the right)!
So you'll have to use either a VGA - HDMI cable... or a standard VGA - VGA cable - of suitable length.
Your HDTV will almost certainly have a VGA port as well, specifically to allow connection of a computer (my 42" Toshiba HDTV has one)... but if not, VGA - HDMI is your only option.
Don't go spending ludicrous amounts on a cable though - whichever one you decide to go for!
They're available on Ebay a lot cheaper than many stores charge!

Great, many thanks for your answer..
But I have a further issue. I mean, I dont want to watch movies via my laptop. I have an external bluerayplayer.
I just like to connect my laptop with the TV for working reasons / maybe also for some gaming. What about the quality of picture? I thought no pc game is made for full HD - only movies are full HD. So the quality of picture of the desktop view or pc games shouldnt be bad on the TV if i connect it VGA/VGA in comparison to HDMI/HDMI..?!
- Is there a difference between connecting it VGA/VGA or VGA/HDMI - I dont think so..?!
- DO I have a chance to somehow use the capability of outputting the full HD of my videocard? Via a docking station? Plsd to hear
Many thanks in advance again!

You're right. Whilst games can be run in full HD resolutions - if the graphics card/system is up to it... no game has yet been released in full HD specifically.
I don't think so either?
That's beyond my (admittedly limited) realm of expertise I'm afraid. I don't know what docking stations are capable of?
That said... I very much doubt any docking station would have features which would help improve picture quality?
That's almost wholly dependant on the capabilities of your graphics card :emotion-55:

From my limited understanding, you may not be able to use a video adaptor to go from VGA to HDMI, as VGA is to my understanding more of a type of analog signal, and HDMI is more of a digital type. A DVI output would work perfectly with HDMI. However I am a newbee and do not understand all of this. I have been looking at converters which cost anywhere from $39 on ebay to 200. You could get a connector to go from VGA to the old Red White and Yellow connectors for a 420 I picture. Please, If anyone understands this better please enlighten me as I have a 1310 with VGA out only and want to to to HDMI or even RGB. If I don't need to spend $$ on a converter but just get a cable adaptor, i would be very pleased.
