DELL XPS M1210 USB 2.0 Problem
I have a Dell XPS M1210 and recently upgraded to Windows Vista. The only problem I have is with USB 2.0. Whenever I plug an external USB device, specifically external hard drive, the OS tells me that it cannot recognize the device. What I found is, when I disable the Intel 82801GB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller 27CC driver in the device manager it begins to work however the OS says that it can perform faster if I plug it into a USB 2.0 slot. I thought with an upgrade to Windows 7 it would resolve the issue however I am still experiencing the same issue.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?
Thanks!
Ryan

If the external device is a 2.5" (small) size, make sure you use one of the following:
A powered USB hub,
A power supply for the drive, or
A dual-tap USB cable (uses two ports on the computer side).
A single USB port many times will not power a drive sufficiently and can produce the problems you're seeing.

Thanks for the quick response. It's a full size external drive with a power supply by WD. I have tried many others as well and have the same problem. The interesting piece to note is that it will work fine, of course in a degraded state, when I disable the Intel 82801GB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller 27CC driver in the device manager, it will only run at USB 1.0.
Thanks,

I am getting very much the same problem with my XPS M1330 running Windows 7, except that it is intermittent. Every few weeks the machine suddenly stops recognizing any of my USB 2.0 devices, for a period of from 12 - 24 hours. Only USB 1.0 devices work, and only when plugged directly into the port (not via a USB 2.0 hub). Of course they all work fine when plugged into another machine. I've tried rebooting, System Restore, everything I could think of to no avail. Then suddenly (usually after a gap of some hours) I try plugging them in again and they work again just fine. I called Dell support and they say this is probably a WIndows 7 device driver incompatibility problem, so it's interesting to see you getting a similar problem with Vista.
I'm sorry I don't have a solution or suggestion. If anyone does, please post it!
