DMIDecode or OEM maximum ram difference

I have an old Inspiron 640m that I am using to run Linux, but the RAM is being maxed out shortly after boot. It currently has 1GB, but the user guide says the maximum is 2GB, but when I run $ dmidecode -t 16, it states that the maximum supported is 4GB. I have searched for such issues, but so far the best I can come up with is faulty RAM chips. So, will 4GB work in the system, or will that be a waste of money?
