DVD ROM hardware or driver issue? AutoRun.exe won't execute
We have a Dell Inspiron 1545, with a 2.1 GHz processor, Windows 7. We are trying to load a new software game and AutoRun.exe consistently says "Not Responding". The DVD rom takes forever to read the disc and it will NOT load this game. We also have trouble watching DVDs, this just started.
Dell support has already looked at this issue and we have updated the drivers, the BIOS and run the PSA tests when the computer boots up. Nothing so far has resolved this issue. is it hardware related, or a software glitch? Any thoughts?
-Thank you

Hi
The best way to isolate the problem (hardware/software) is to check if the drive reads disks outside your windows. We need to boot from the disk.
If you have a Drivers and utilities disk or a windows disk, insert it. Shutdown the system, start the computer when you see the dell logo hit F12 till you see boot options.
Highlight CD/DVD using the arrow keys and keep tapping Enter.
If your windows loads (When using the drivers disk) which would mean its a hardware problem.
If the Drivers disk loads fine , you would see further set of options, then its a software problem.

I loaded our Windows 7 upgrade CD and told the laptop to boot to it first and it did. It loaded the files and proceeded to beginning installation screen for Windows7. Does this indicate an issue with software or something specifically with the PC game we're trying to load.
The PC game does require 2.4GHz processor with Windows 7 and I have a 2.1GHz. Would that be enough to not even allow it to install?
Thanks again for your help.

Well that clearly indicates that the hardware is working fine.
It could be a problem with the game disk, the compatibility requirements would come into the picture during the game installation, if the game doesnt meet the required hardware requirements then it would state the same.
try running the windows 7 disk in the OS, if this runs fine its a problem with the game disk. If not then its a corruption within the operating system.
