Delete Registry Files

Anyone know how to delete registry files from a device I no longer use? I try but get "cannot delete" errors. Most of these are hive files. But they are affecting my PC and causing crashes, as Services keeps trying to find the device on bootup. Do I have to do a fresh install?T

Thanks in advance.

Don't blame me:-) I believe you can delete them in safe mode.

Good luck,

Andy

Found this on Google searching newsgroups. Use REGEDT32

It would have been interesting to know *what* error message you get.

Anyway, it's probably some security issue:

1. Make sure you have administrator privileges.
2. Use REGEDT32 instead of REGEDIT.
3. Select the key you want to delete.
4. Select "Security" and check "Allow - Full Control".
5. Delete the key.
6. Not a kernel-mode issue at all.

You made my year. I've searched everywhere and spoken to many "tech" guys- you got it right. I really appreciate your help!

I use a freeware called RegCleaner to delete registry entries of programs. It automatically creates a Backup of the registry entries that have been deleted so that they may be restored, if necessary.

Thank Google. It's the place to go for answers. If you can't find an answer searching the Web, search the newsgroups... Of cource I didn't come up with RegCleaner:-) And let's not forget to thank Dell for this forum!

Alas, I had found Reg. Cleaner but it would not have solved my problem. The tech guys for the software said nope. But, perhaps if I'd had it before this debacle....

Thanks all
