Dell Audio Does Not Automatically Recognize The Type of Audio Device In Audio Jack

My Dell Inspiron 15 has Dell Audio on it.

This box is accessible when a device is plugged in the audio jack. In the picture, the "Mic In" option is selected. If I unplugged the mic and plugged in headphones, Dell Audio would think my headphones were a mic and would still send sound to the speakers. If I wanted Dell Audio to know I had headphones plugged in, I would have to open the box again and select "Headphones". Is there a way to switch external audio devices properly without going through all this trouble? If not, please release an update to the software and audio drivers.

Hello. Does it work any better if you disable the popup and just choose the default devices in the Sound properties?

No. The problem has to do with recognizing external audio devices. Also, I've tried setting the audio device to Microphone and plugging a mic in, and the "Microphone" box listed above switches to the external mic instead of adding a new box. Is this a Windows 8.1 problem only?

I think it is that Dell Audio software, which is why I suggested disabling its pop ups. I would try removing it entirely and just select the devices in the Sound properties. The audio should automatically switch to the headphones when plugged in, when Speakers are the default device.

What model laptop do you have? The ones in the Inspiron 15 series are:

Inspiron  1564, M5010, N5010, M5030, N5030, N5040, N5050, 3520, 3521, 3531, 3537, 3541, 3542, 3543, 3551, 3558, 5542, 5545, 5543, 5545, 5547, 5548,  5551,  5558, 7537, 7547, 7548.

Then it seems to recognize when you plug in a mic at least. The problem is just that it doesn't recognize when you plug in headphones?

I have an Inspiron 15 3537. The Microphone device only switches to an external mic if I tell the computer that a microphone is plugged in. I know how to prevent the external device identifier box from opening automatically when I plug in a device, but I don't think there is a way to permanently erase the box from my computer's hard drive.
