Dell Datasafe Local Backup Factory Reset recovery DVD error

Hi,

My old HDD (640GB) on my Inspiron 17R crashed. I bought a new 500GB Hard disk (as out of warranty) and fitted it. I tried to restore my Licensed Windows 7 installation onto the new HDD.

So booted up the Recovery DVD, went to Factory Image Restore however there's an error: "Your hard drive size is not supported for this process. Please use a hard drive at least 596GB in size."

What should I do?

I thought that in a Factory Restore all the formatting options are presented again. Anyways there was no 640GB disk available in the vicinity (even at the Dell Service Center).

I've got the same problem where my original 500 GB bit the dust and I'm trying to restore to a 250 GB SDD. It says I need at least a 465 GB HD. That's not making any sense to me to have to buy the exact same drive you had. (downright dumb, actually) That seems to defeat the purpose of "Restoring" your computer. Does anybody know what to do and how this can be worked around?

OK  - after searching around some more - I've discovered that the restore disks are actually an "image" of your original hard drive so you have to restore to a disk that is at least as big as your original one. Dumb but true. The best thing appears to be to ask Dell for a new set of installation disks for the operating system (Win 7, etc.). There is a form on here somewhere to request disks (if you're in the US) and that's what I did. We'll see what happens with that.
