I found the same problem with a Studio 540. Downloaded all the manual files, extracted them and placed them as you did, but there was no attachment to Document Viewer. All of these files could be opened manually with Adobe PDF reader, but wouldn't tie with that program. Essentially the Viewer is empty and useless. After spending several hours with a technician from India working on my screen, it was discovered that a link between this viewer and some program he referred to as windows document reader didn't exist and a patch would be in an update in the near future. Must be another oversight like "giving" us a version of Roxio that doesn't work with 64-bit platforms.
Can I ask why you use the 'Dell Document Viewer' to view documents, instead of Windows own standard Notepad - or Wordpad?
If that's the way the system was setup when you bought it (shame on you Dell), I'd recommend changing document viewing back to Notepad - or Wordpad if you need more features :emotion-55:
To do that, right-click on any document... choose 'Open with', then 'Choose Default Program'.
Make sure the box in the bottom left which says 'Always use the selected program to open files of this kind' is ticked, before then double-clicking on either Notepad or Wordpad.
Subsequently, all documents will then open with whichever of the two you chose, and you won't have any more problems with the Dell Document Viewer :emotion-5:
I also have the same problem with a studio 540 using windows vista 64-bit. It seems that it is a compatibility problem that Dell Software Support can help you resolve. It just seems that when you buy a new computer from Dell with software installed by Dell, you should not have to pay Software Support to fix a malfunctioning piece of software supplied by Dell.
Please let me know if you end up with further valid information on the subject.
Good luck in finding the solution to your problem.
But further replies might be few and far between, because it's possible others could now be wary of offering suggestions, for fear of also getting it wrong, and subsequently incurring your wrath :emotion-55:
Not only that, but I bet you've posted a lot dumber answers than that one anyway, huh?.
[Joking! I know I've left plenty of clunkers scattered around this forum.]
But seriously guys, this is the Laptop Audio board which is probably not the best place for this conversation. I'd suggest posting on one of the software boards, maybe Productivity Software.
You can view my response to the Dell Document Viewer problem where I give an interim solution under the title: "Studio 540 (Vista 64) Dell Document Viewer interm Fix to add new docs" on another category of this forum. If you do a search you will find it.
I managed to find a "fix" on one of the Dell Forums and will give credit when I find it again. Essentially, you have to edit the eddy.ini file which is found in the folder with the document viewer application. Be sure to first uncheck the "Read Only" box for the eddy file and then open it with Notepad. You will need to enter the following info for each document you want to open with the Dell Document Viewer... NOTE: double spacing between each new document entry. The following would be added to whatever is already in the eddy file and each document needs its own similar info.
[sm_en] (you would change this to whatever the file name is of the document you want to use - in this case a service manual_english)
type= (no change here)
Title=Dell xps9000 Service Manual (The title of the document that will appear in the Viewer)
link=C:\doctemp\sm_en\index.htm (this is the starting path - change the sm_en to match whatever the downloaded file document name is) The index will be part of the unzipped html file package
Now Save the file and close. You may want to re-apply the Read Only attribute.
Notes: You would get the manuals from the Dell web site for your model computer. I only had luck when downloading the html version of the manual. You will need to unzip the file and then copy that unzipped folder (sm_en in above example) and paste it into the c:\doctemp folder.
Now open your Dell Document VIewer and you should be asked if you want to proceed adding the document to the viewer.
When done, the doc should appear in the viewer and clicking on it should bring up the index. The foregoing worked with Windows 7 64 bit with html docs. No clue about .pdf docs. Also, the Search function is still a problem. Will fool with both (maybe the type= has something to do with it)
Did manage to get a Dell manual pdf file to show up in the Dell Document Viewer. Similar process as posted earlier except the ,pdf file is pasted into the doctemp folder. Also, the name of the file in the eddy file must have the extension .pdf.
Below is the complete eddy file as it now stands. All listed documents show in viewer. However, no luck yet with the Search function in the viewer. Did not try non-Dell .pdf files - just the Dell manuals that were downloaded.
However, I do not understand why the user must do all this eddy file editing on their own. Many users would not attempt.
Found that to get the Search function to work in the viewer, you need to add the keyword "FAQ" to the type= section of the eddy file entries. This does not show in the previous post but Search worked when it was added. There are other keywords that are available but did not try any other than FAQ. See replies in forum location below.
type=faq

Hi,
The suggestion to use Notepad or Wordpad is about the dumbest answer to a query I ever had.
For a start, how does Notepad read the PDF and HTML documents concerned?
Secondly, I could, of course, use Acrobat and Explorer that do read PDF and HTML documents.
Thirdly, if a car is supposed to come with four seats but is delivered with three, who would put garden stool in it?
etc.
