If your original ram is still working after you swap it back in, but the new ram does not work, then you should contact amazon for replacement ram. It is possible that the stick of ram you received is defective and can cause damage to your system. I would not recommend any further use of the ram and would absolutely recommend contacting amazon back for a replacement.
Amazon is great about sending replacements, and typically you can go under your orders on their site and request a replacement before even sending back the first stick you bought.
you need only DDR2 SODIMM RAM only, what you have purchased seems to be different. please check more on http://laptopmag.com/advice/how-to/dell-mini-ram.aspx i am about to go for replacement for my dell mini 1012. and my IT friend advised above. thanks

Definitely a strange reaction to new ram.
