Dell Inspiron Laptop 1501 - Maximum RAM

Hi,

The system came with 2x 512MB RAM - total of 1GB. I was sent a 2GB memory upgrade, so I had to remove one of the modules, and was supposed to get 2.5 GB in total. But it seems like the machine will only take max 1GB per slot, and max 2GB in total, despite that my system says it has 2.5GB.

Correct?

Many thanks!

Hi kavakava1
Here is the manual for your 1501.

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

But i find your reply here {despite that my system says it has 2.5GB.}
very interesting you installed a 2 gig stick  and a 512 stick and it shows you have 2.5 gig,s
Does it show this in the {bios} and does your 1501 run with no problems as in blue screens
or hang ups does it seem stable when you boot to windows and run it for a while ?

If you look at the manual it says you can run one or two of the 512  and one or two 1 gig
sticks of ram !
And the manual shows you can run with a 2 gig stick but like you said it shows you have 2.5 with
one 2 gig  and one 512 stick !!
Can you confirm your 1501 runs fine with the 2.5 gig,s installed ?
If it does i would like to try using a 2 gig stick and one 512 for a total of 2.5 !!
or may even try a 2 gig and a 1 gig stick for a total of 3 gig,s !!

Can you post back here if you try to run the 2.5 and it runs fine or if it gives you problems ??
Thanks !!

Hi,

Both Dell and Crucial have now confirmed what leecheeyau said - max 2GB in total, max 1GB per slot.

I have no problems running it as it is, although it does not seem to utilise the full available 2,5 GB, but only 1,5 GB (1GB from the 2GB memory module and the second original 512MB module).

Weird, but that's how it seems to be!
:smileytongue:

Hi
It does seem weird that Dell does say it will work with one 2 gig stick for a total of 2 gig,s
but it only will post at 1.5 !
Did you try it without the 512 installed to see if it works with the one 2 gig stick ?
I guess Dell made a miss print in there some where!!
I do know the 1501 does not have dual channel memory to get in the way it will run on almost any thing you put in it .
Thanks

Hi
If you look at the manual it says you can run with a 512 mb , 1 gig or 2 gig stick.
It would seem that with the 2 gig stick installed it would read it as 2 gig,s in the bios
Like i said Dell may have made a miss print with the 2 gig stick thou !

Hi,

Dell has NOT said "it will work with one 2 gig stick for a total of 2 gig,s" as you suggest. Where did you get that from?

Hi

The total for the 1501 is 2 gig,s max you have 1 gig witch is more than likely 2 512 mb sticks

you would have to remove them and get 2  1 mb stick for a total of 2 gig,s.

Good Luck

I just installed an OCZ dual channel kit into my 1501.

2 x 2GB sticks of PC2-6400 ram . Runs fine !

Vista Basic recognizes "2.62" gigs , but all 4 gigs show up in hardware scans, and on startup.

Is it worth to upgrade from 2x1GB to 1GB+2GB which is no longer dual channel? for a XP

Will anyone install a Win7x64 on this Inspiron 1501?

I am typing this response on a dell 1501 inspiron running 4GB of ram. The ram is recognized by the OS (Ubuntu 64bit). I have also run Windows 7 64bit and it also recognizes all 4GB of ram, and uses it. I know the manual says 2GB limit, and this is Dell's official spec on the hardware, but the machine will run 4GB (2x2GB) without any problems.

I knew it. Now, I'm curious, can you run any MORE? I have the most up-to-date BIOS (2.6.3), and am running Windows 7 Ult. 63-bit. Do you happen to know what the ACTUAL max RAM this system is capable of handling is? I want this to be the last time I upgrade the RAM. Thanks!
