Dell Inspiron N5010 display failure - 8 beeps code - external monitor OK

Hi,

I need assitance for my Dell Inspiron N5010. The laptop has recently started to express a beep code while powering up the system. I got a black screen. The beep code is for display failure (8 beeps in a row). The display finally starts after 15-20 minutes of power on / power off attempts. If the laptop is sent to sleep, the display recovers first shot at power up. When the system is connected to an external monitor, it starts fine without beeping. The AMD Radeon video card seems to work just fine. When the laptop beeps, the LCD pattern check fails to execute. The screen stays back.

I have read a few threads on the topic and based on the symptoms, I have decided to replace the LCD. After replacement, the same beeping scheme continues. So, unless I am extremely unlucky to have 2 displays with the same failure, I believe now the problem is somewhere else. The new display has its own set of cables to connect to the motherboard. So, I think the cabling is not an issue.

The system is no longer under warranty and I must admit the next step is probably motherboard replacement as I suspect the wiring between the video card and the display connector is getting flaky.

I would like to get the opinion from the experts on this forum. Please, advise. I am running out of ideas and feel a bit frustrated. This is good laptop but the beeps are getting me mad! :)

Thanks!

Claude.

Hi Claude,

I appreciate your efforts. As you have mentioned already, the issue seems to be with the connection between the LCD and the video connector on the motherboard. You can try the old LCD screen with the new LCD inverter cable or vice-versa and see if that helps. Otherwise, it may require a motherboard replacement.

Alternately, you can try to update the BIOS. Refer to this link for the BIOS update: http://dell.to/PSQskL
Before flashing the BIOS please check the following:
* No external devices(except the keyboard, mouse and monitor) should be connected.
* All other programs should be closed and documents saved.
* The AC adapter should be connected during this process. The battery should be 10% or more than 10% charged.
Click on 'Download File'>> click 'Continue'>> Click 'Yes' on User Account control if prompted>>Click 'Continue' on the Application prompt>> Click 'OK' on Select the folder where you want to unzip the files to (make a note of the folder location)>> Click 'Yes' on the next prompt for folder does not exist>> Click 'OK' on All files were successfully unzipped. >> If the installation wizard does not appear, go to the folder location>> select the Setup file >> Right-click and select 'Run as Administrator'>>Follow the installation wizard instructions. The laptop will reboot after this update.

Hope this helps.
Please revert for clarification.

Hi Claude

I have the same problem with my Dell N5010 laptop.

I also purchased a screen with the display cable but still it doesn't works and gives 8 beeps but works fine with the external monitor. And i am stuck with two screens paying almost 7000 on it.

Is updating the BIOS solved the problem in your laptop.?

It would me great if you answer to my request.

thankyou.

Hi,

Unfortunately, the BIOS did not help...

Next step is to swap the motherboard.

It's frustrating to see the external VGA connector is working like a charm while the flat panel isn't. The laptop is now used more or less as a desktop with an external monitor. From time to time, the flat panel wakes up. But very rarely...

Regards,

Claude.
