Dell Inspiron does not boot - blinking cursor

My Dell Inspiron does not boot - only thing I see is a blinking cursor on the top left corner after the Dell screen. I'm able to boot to Windows Vista using hiren's bootcd by selecting the operating system.

So, I used hiren's bootcd to boot and hit F8 quickly to get to the "Advanced Boot options"
I selected "Repair your computer" and used Dell recovery to recover my laptop to factory setting. Dell system recovery was completed successfully, but I still get the blinking cursor.

I believe it has to do with the boot sector/ boot manager or something because I can still boot to windows using the hiren's bootcd.

I have three partitions: (in this order)
1. EISA
2. OS
3. Recover
Currently the "Active" partition is 2. OS

Hi Hatsoff1,

Blinking cursor might be due to a harddrive failure. Request you to run diagnostics on the system by starting the system holding the "Fn" key. This will check all the hardware components on the system. Once the test is complete I request you to restart the system and as soon as it starts please keep tapping F2 key which should take you to BIOS screen. Please check if the Harddrive is detected

Please reply in case of queries

Thanks and Regards

I did run the diagnostic and found error code 2000-0146 (HD error)

But, like I said I can still boot to Windows with the help from hiren's bootcd.

Also, I attached the hard drive into another system and were able to access it fine.

I made a image for the entire drive and deleted all partitions on the drive (made it as a raw drive.) Then I put the image back on the drive, and it work very well. Thank you for the reply.
