Dell Latitude D830 LCD panel type

Hi,

I think of purchasing Latitude D830 when a dedicated graphic card option is available.

Does anybody know if the screen type of the 15.4" D8xx series is either TN or IPS ?

I will use my external Dell 2007WFP panel hooked to the laptop, but when I am on the road I will still need the perfect colors and wide view angles I get from the 2007WFP panel.

p.s.: I received a word that only the MacBookPro and/or IBM T6xP have IPS screen, hope it's not true.

Thank you in advance!

cheers

Can you please try to identify the display type with some software?
Maybe you could ask the Dell support about this, as they are not likely to respond to the issue in this very forum.

Thank you in advance!

I have a D830 with a WSXGA+ 1680*1050 screen and that is identified as a Seiko Epson SEC3350 panel. The panel is very bad by the way, I have already called for replacement. Mine has 2 vertical thick stripes which is lighter than teh rest and also the light bleeding at the bottom of the screen is massive.

I just got my D830 with WSXGA+ and it has a SEC3350 panel too. It has a bit of a grainy effect on light colored backgrounds and somewhat limited viewing angle. Is everyone else with WSXGA+ happy with their panels? Is there something other than the SEC3350 available?

how do you determine the screen manufacturer?

If you look up your system config on the dell website using your service tag, you should see something like "NK058 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 15.4WSXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., SAMSUNG" in the list of parts.

You can also use the Windows Device Manager. Look under the entry for your display adapter. Right click to display the properties. Under the "Details" tab, look for the "Bus Relations" property. You should see something like: DISPLAY\SEC3350\4&203436d8&0&UID67568640

daz00 , how do you like your display? Are you overally enjoying it? Does it have defects when working with software, not just having black, white or gray background displayed?

The display is usable, but disappointing. I got my D830 WSXGA+ with the Intel integrated video, and out of the box, the display had a strong blueish cast. Tweaking some of the color correction settings made things look a little better. You might have a different experience with discrete graphics.

There's a grainy/silvery effect that's visible on light backgrounds like in a web browser. It might be the coating on the screen. The viewing angle seems to be a bit tight too. It's pretty bright when looking at it from the sweet spot, but if you move your head just a little, you'll get some noticeable shifting in brightness/color. The viewing angles and light leakage (at the bottom) also makes it hard to get color looking uniform across the screen. Something that's a nice yellow at the top of the screen, might look grayish at the bottom of the screen.

I was able to put my D830/Intel/Samsung WSXGA+ next to a D820/Nvidia/LG WUXGA and the difference was pretty dramatic. The D820's screen was better in every way. Didn't notice the grainy/silvery effect, great viewing angles, and much better color saturation. My D830 paled in comparison and looked washed out.

What is everyone else experiencing with their panels?

I think this whole LCD panel thing with the D830 is a pretty sad state of affairs. Perhaps this is why Dell is having trouble competing. There's no good reason to put a substandard screen in a business notebook. After all, business people need a high quality display as well, don't they? Why is the assumption made that we require something less? I just don't get it. Dell, Put a decent display in these things. Raise the price, if necessary. I'll pay for what I get but not for what I *don't* get.

Hi!, sorry for reviving an old thread: I have the same problem, D830 with WSXGA+ SEC....
Grainy, sand surface...
Like bathroom windows glass, made to not let people crearly see inside...
Not so much, ofd course, but it is as the panel protecting the lcd is a sort of dark, grainy, not focused. Really unpleasant to see, it is an important aspect of the notebook, it is like the eyes of a person, he can have good brain, but the first thing you look at is eyes, and it is a pleasure to look into beautifull shining solar crisp clear eyes of a beautiful girl... This screen is like a sleepy, druggy, drunk, confused poor "turned off" girl...
I can't accept it.
But they say that there is just one type of wsxga+ available, so if the screen is not faulty as exemplar but as model itself, I would not solve anything by changing it with another wsxga+.
Do you know if the wxga or wuxga are better? They told me there is one type of wxga and two of wuxga available...
Which one should I ask for???

I talked with Dell. They have just this SEC3350 WSXGA+ in the D830. And they do not accept to change it for the LG available in the VOSTRO, nor for the WXGA or the WUXGA availables in the D830, not even paying the difference for the WUXGA and renouncing to the difference with ther WXGA.
They know they are selling a bad display, i am sure, if we know, of course they know. I suspect they have bought many of them and they prefer to sell them than to throw them.
I understand they have rules, but I guess it would be a signal of nobility from Dell to change it for a LG one when people ask it.
I suspect that Dell is putting it on buisinees notebooks because buying as buyisiness you do not have the right to give it back as privates can do...
I suspect Dell is playing not clean...
I am SURE that someone in Dell CAN authorize a change of display such the one I am asking for. I am much much more than SURE.
If they will not, I promise, I of course will never buy anymore Dell, and, I am sorry for all the wornderful people I talk to in Dell (very nice Commercial agent, very nive technicians), but I will do whatever to have my friends not buy a Dell never. And I will post in any notebook forum in the world.
I am like that. I can be the best friend or the worst enemy.
The fate wants that i wanted to write a review, i already have the contact with notebookitalia.it, notebookreview.com, notebookcheck.com.... They will post my review.
I sware I will be totally objective. I will not hide the very beautifull aspect of this noitebook, not of Dell employers. But I wil be totally sincere about the LCD and the treatment received...
I was really happy to receive the new notebook.
The rigidity of Dell and especially the fact that I am sure they know they are playing durty, well, I am unhappy 1000%.
It is not human. It is sadic...

I just ordered a D830 with WXGA. Does anyone have any information about the quality of that screen. I need large fonts, so want the lower resolution.

Thanks for any opinions. If the screen is really bad I may cancel my order.

Well, in this case, stay with the WXGA. I do not want to cause panic, but I think, for my personal experiece (two SEC3350 both awful) and for lot of comments in the web, well I think the WSXGA+ on D830 is NOT a good choice untill Dell will not stop putting the SEC3350.
It seems that the WUXGA is better even if not wonderfull, but let's say that more peopole can find it good.
With an external display, you will have no problem...
I guess a WXGA+ should be always available, as passing from WXGA to WSXGA+ is a big step.
Bye!

Thanks for the information, Sergioo. It is good to know there might be an option to exchange, should I have a problem. I should have mentioned that I have been using a D600 with resolution of 1024x768 and have no problem with that screen. I always use a dual display, extending the desktop to a 19 inch monitor.
Thanks again.

I have read that someone has got problems, but should not be as the SEC3350.
Also, as far as I know, there are two different WXGA available for the D830, so, if you don't like the one you get, you can try to ask for the other (ask technicians for which models are they).
I do not think there are two Samsung in same resolution, so I guess one must be a LG. Well, could be an AUO...
Good Luck.
