Dell Latitude, Incomplete boot , NumLock led stays lit
I have a dell latitude d400. Recently my battery went dead whiles I was using my laptop. I plugged in the power cord and turned it on but it will boot to the xp windows page and then show up a black screen with "we apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start succesfully...." then it gives options for safe mode , last known good configuration and start windows normally , but none of them fixes the problem. I realized the led numlock light (a lock with 9) stays lit. Any clue to what the problem is? This is a fairly new laptop that I have had for about 4 years but really don't use it. it was working just fine before.
I have reseated the RAM and hard drive but it didnt help

Press F12 when you power the system on. Boot to the Dell diagnostics and run an extended hard drive test.
If the drive passes the extended test (the 2 hour one - NOT the quick 10 minute test), then you may have a corrupted Windows installation due to the shutdown. If the drive fails, replace it.
