Dell Studio 1558 not charging
My Dell Studio 1558 does not charge the battery.
It DOES recognize the battery.
It runs with the AC adapter, even if the battery is removed.
It boots and runs with a new battery I bought. It sees the battery and shows the percentage of charge, but says it's discharging even with the AC adapter connected. I assume the old battery has completely discharged because it isn't recognized.
How do I fix the problem?

Check the BIOS setup - if the AC adapter is listed as "unknown", the battery will not charge. F2 at powerup.
If so, try a new OEM Dell AC adapter (or borrow one from a friend) first.
If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack:

And if that doesn't solve it, replace the mainboard.

Thanks, the BIOS says "None" for the AC Adapter, even though the computer is running on that adapter. I'll try to find another adapter to try. Does the adapter have a signal to identify it other than providing the proper voltage or could it be the connector cable?

Third party adapters usually won't complete the charge circuit so it's not necessarily indicative of a problem with anything but the adapter. You should try an OEM Dell adapter first before you do anything else; if you don't have one, most computer shops will.
If a genuine Dell adapter doesn't solve the problem, proceed as above - replace the jack first, and if that doesn't solve the problem, you'll have to decide whether a mainboard replacement (which will cost over $100 just for the part) or a system replacement is in order.

There is a connector that is required to communicate with the charging circuit, yes --- separate from the + and - leads of the adapter and jack.
If the adapter is not identified, the battery will not charge.

I located a replacement adapter that I bought when I first encountered the problem. It's a third party part. I get the same results. I see some people who replace the connector. What's the chances of that being the problem? I don't recall ever dropping it when the adapter was plugged in and the connector doesn't seem loose. Years ago, I damaged a connector on another laptop when it fell.
