Dell Studio Laptop - black screen

I am working on this for a user and when it tries to boot, you can hear the fan and hard drive but the screen stays blank.

I have tried plugging it into an external monitor and it didn't recognize that.

I did the display diagnostic to hold down d + pwr and it did display the colors but then when it goes to reboot the screen goes back to black.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I work in an IT department and repair dell desktop and laptop computers and am fairly familiar with them but this one is out of warranty and I am quite stumped.

Hi bbukovsky,

Please share the exact system model. Do you see the Dell logo when you turn on the system? What is the power light status on the system? Do you hear any beeps from your system? I will recommend you to run the diagnostics on your system to check the hardware functionality:

  • Power off the system completely.
  • Press and hold 'Fn' key and press the power button at the same time; make sure you keep 'Fn' key pressed when the power button is pressed.
  • This should initiate the diagnostics.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

There is nothing on the screen. It is not dim it is off. I can not run any other diagnostics. I tried the function key and pwr but the screen is black so if diagnostics are running I'll never know it. There are no beeps. The only noise I hear is the fan/HD running. The pwr button stays solid lit.

Ok, so I have determined it is the system board which is bad (I'm guessing the on board video card.)  But because the unit is out of warranty I need to get a system board and my only other question is:

Is Intel the only processor that was used in this model? Or do I need to check and see what is in there before I go looking for a new one.

Thank you for all your help!

Hi bbukovsky,

I appreciate your technical expertise. It appears to be an issue with the motherboard, however, If you could help me with the system model and the exact status of the power light (If it is solid blue or amber), I will be able to let you know the exact issue with the system. For any spare parts related query for your system, you may contact Dell Sales department. Go to www.support.dell.com
Select the country/region from the top, scroll down and click on 'Contact Dell Sales' to get the contact information.

Please reply for any further questions.

While I appreciate that you work for Dell and your agenda is to make them money, I will not be ordering any parts from Dell. Thank you for your time and effort in this matter.

I'm having the same problem, the power light is blueish in color. My volume button are all on with the no volume and high volume buttoms flashing constantly. When I hooked the laptop up to a monitor it worked. So I think that the video card is working fine.

Hi kajohnz,

Please share the system model. Since the external monitor is working fine with your system, it appears to be an issue either with the inverter cable (LCD cable) or the LCD.

I have added you as a friend. In case the issue still persists, please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

I am sending you a private message as well. Click on “Inbox” to respond to the message and provide system’s Service Tag on a private message so I may access your system records and check and check for further course of action. You could also click on Start Conversation to send a private message.

Please reply for any further questions.

Hi kajohnz,

Thank you for sharing the Service Tag through the private message. Since the warranty of your system has been expired, you may try re-seating/replacing Inverter cable (LCD cable) to see if that makes a difference. If that does not fix the issue, the LCD on your system needs replacement. You may contact Out of Warranty department (For USA only) at 1-800-288-4410 to get this issue fixed.

Please reply or any further questions.

I changed the inverter and the screen but I still get the black screen. And I still have the lights flashing. Does anyone have an idea on the blinking lights code really mean? Because it seems it has nothing to do with the screen.

I am having the same problem with my Dell Studio 1435.

I was using Ubuntu 12.10 on the system and abruptly the screen blacked out, ever since i could not found any solution to this issue. On power up i can see the DELL Logo and progress bar with boot options and immediately the screen turns black..does not responds to any of the keys. Anyways my system is out of warranty i tried resetting the BIOS, Formatting the HDD, but none of it help.

Can any one please report back what exactly the issue is..? i am sure this must be a known issue.

Unfortunately, Studio 1435 is only for sales and service in Asia Pacific, so i have to be either send my laptop to Dell service location in asia pacific.

I was working on my Dell Studio 1555 last night can't remember if I shutdown or not but it was plugged in. I woke up this morning going and hit the power button and all I could hear was the fan and power button was lit solid white bUT screen was black. I applied email every trouble shooting method I found on the Internet with no luck. Finally,  I unplugged, removed the battery flipped it over and removed the memory cover. Removed the 2 banks of memory, plugged in and pushed in the power button...all I got was a continuous beeping noise and running fan. Next I unplugged and inserted the memory back to it slots plugged it in and pushed the power button again. This time it booted uplease right away with the working screen. The only thing I noticed was the date and clock were defaulted back to 2008. I manually fixed date and time and shut down and rebooted several times. All is good! Hope this helps anyone with the same issue.
