Dell XPS 12 Auto-Rotate Button Unresponsive

I have had my XPS 12 since November and use it mainly in tablet orientation. This morning, I press the Auto-Rotate button on the side of the machine and find it unresponsive. I know it only works when the device is in tablet mode. There is also a software toggle in Windows 8, which I have resorted to using. I haven't found anybody else with this problem, and I am wondering if it is hardware or software. I think the button used to click, and if it did, mine doesn't anymore when pressed.

HI, I got the same problem. I bought mine last January and this morning suddenly the rotate button did not work and I don't know what to do...

I had had the same problem for the past few weeks. Thought something might have broken because setting/rebooting didn't help.

I had been trying to get the screen to rotate in laptop mode, but nothing would happen. Today, I flipped the screen to full tablet mode and rotated the system around in all directions and the screen rotations started working. It acts like it needed a "violent" reset, and now all is good.

Hope yours can come back to life as well...

I solved the problem doing a recovery (there is a Dell app for that)... my files and app were not deleted and now the rotate button is working. Also the recovery solved some problems with my wifi... I hope this is helpful for you

Using the recovery app fixed my rotation issue as well, without any other noticeable data loss.

I've had the same problem it started about 5-6 months after I bought my XPS.   Is there any updated info on this?

I have this problem as well.  on my 9Q23.  I was reading another thread and there are a lot of people experiencing this after upgrading to Windows 8.1.  I had just done that.  So far, the only issue I have is the screen orienting properly when I rotate the device.

In that same thread, it looks like they have updated 8.1 drivers for the 9Q33 system (the new one with the Haswell chips) that seem to help, but nothing for the 9Q23 system.

I sent a PM to @DellCares on Twitter.  They asked if I had upgraded to 8.1.  Then got my service tag.  Then said their engineers are looking into the issue and they would get back to me.  Haven't heard back after several days now.

So, by chance, have any of you upgraded to 8.1, then noticed the issue?  Also, please note that in laptop mode, the orientation does not change automatically, only in tablet mode.  Lastly, Windows + O is supposed to orient the display.

Another Update:  I was surprised that my replacement screen was not exhibiting the IR issue, so I decided to do a little investigating.  I looked at my display settings.  I turned off the automatic brightness adjustment and bumped up the brightness to max.  Within about 10 minutes, I started noticing some IR again.  So it had to do with my settings, but the problem is still there.  I turned back on auto brightness and put my max down one notch from the top and I then don't see the issue any more.

This could be why many people aren't seeing this issue, becuase of their brightness settings.  I do remember bumping up the brightness before the issue started on my original panel, but didn't put the two together until now.

I'm curious what others are experiencing based on their brightness settings?

I've upgraded to Windows 8.1 and have the same issue (auto-rotate doesn't work and the button does nothing). Let me know if you get a fix!

I, too, upgraded to Windows 8.1 on XPS 12 9Q23 and the auto rotate button does nothing and I am constantly trying to lock auto-rotate.  One big issue I've recently gotten is that when I hook up to my Targus DisplayLink to connect to my monitor, the screen is fine (upright) on Duplicate, Second Screen only, but completely upside down when I select Second Screen Only.  :emotion-6:  I've installed all current Windows Updates.

Did anyone ever find an answer to this issue?  I am having the same problem.

I face the same Problem on my XPS 12 as well. In tablet mode, auto-Ration randomly stops and only a reboot helps.

Here's another thread on this issue in the Forum:
