From the description it sounds like a problem with the DC jack.  Call Dell for warranty repair.

Hi pij,

Updating the BIOS will also help in fixing this kind of issue. Download the latest version of BIOS using the following link: http://dell.to/10RVgz0

Follow the below mentioned steps to update the BIOS:

  1. Ensure to connect the AC Adapter to the computer and the battery charge is above 15%.
  2. Close all the open programs and make sure to save all the data in the computer.
  3. Run the previously downloaded BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to update the BIOS.
  4. Restart the computer when prompted.
  5. Charge the laptop and check.

Please post the results.

Thanks for the responses.

I already had the latest BIOS version installed so this wasn't the problem. I am on the verge of getting it repaired under warranty, but am just a little concerned because the issue tends to come and go as it pleases, so I may not be able to replicate it when the repairman comes...

As an aside, this isn't the only issue I'm having with the laptop. Occassionally the touchscreen completely stops responding until I do a system reboot, but this is an issue for another topic, and appears to be a common fault of this laptop judging from other threads in this forum...

Hi pij,

I would like to know if you have tried to calibrate the touchscreen to fix the issue. If you have already tried to calibrate the touchscreen, please reset the calibration data. To reset the calibration data, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Settings charm from desktop mode.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select Tablet PC Settings from large icon view.
  4. Select Reset.
  5. Select Apply and Ok.
  6. Check the functionality of the touchscreen.

Please post the results.

I found that a pin inside the tip of the charger was bent to the side. It is very hard to see without the proper lighting. Once I straightened the pin and inserted the charger the XPS 12 started charging again. Why they would make a charger like this that is prone to the pin bending without much force is beyond me. Hope this helps someone.

Got the same charging problem with power adapter on BOTH of my XPS 12.

Centered the adapter pin too & problem solved.
